In a troubling turn of events, Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children has enlisted a third-party investigator following the arrest of one of its housekeeping staff members, Antonio Alvin Dela Cruz, on serious child-luring charges. This marks the second incident involving staff at SickKids being implicated in child exploitation offences within just a few weeks, raising significant concerns about the safeguarding practices at one of Canada’s leading paediatric hospitals.

Staff Member Arrested on Multiple Charges

Antonio Alvin Dela Cruz, aged 55, is now facing five charges, including accessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material and luring a minor via telecommunications. The allegations emerged on Thursday when the Toronto police revealed the ongoing investigation, which initiated in October 2024. Reports indicate that Dela Cruz had allegedly sent inappropriate messages and explicit images to a 15-year-old through social media and chat applications.

Upon learning of the charges, SickKids promptly placed Dela Cruz on leave, and he has since resigned from his position. In a statement, Ronald Cohn, president and chief executive of SickKids, expressed the hospital’s deep concern regarding the situation, asserting that such conduct is entirely unacceptable and undermines the trust placed in hospital staff by patients, families, and the wider community.

Hospital Takes Action

In response to these alarming developments, SickKids has engaged KPMG, a reputable auditing firm, to conduct a thorough review of its human resources and information technology governance. The aim is to identify weaknesses and enhance safeguards related to recruitment, pre-employment screening, and monitoring the use of technology by employees. A spokesperson for SickKids, Sarah Warr, emphasised the hospital’s commitment to ensuring the safety of its patients and staff, and the need to bolster protective measures against potential misconduct.

The investigation culminated in a search warrant executed last week in the vicinity of Don Mills Road and Highway 401, where police seized multiple electronic devices and documentation related to the case. Dela Cruz is scheduled to appear in court on July 29.

Broader Context of Child Exploitation Charges

This incident follows closely on the heels of another shocking case at SickKids. Just last month, Dr. Dilan Dissanayake, a 44-year-old rheumatologist, was arrested and charged with possessing and accessing child sexual abuse material. The hospital has stated that, to their knowledge, the two employees were not acquainted nor did they work together. The allegations against both individuals remain unproven in court.

The frequency of these serious allegations has raised red flags about the hospital’s recruitment and oversight processes. SickKids has reiterated its unwavering priority: the safety and well-being of its patients, families, and staff.

Why it Matters

The recent arrests at SickKids underscore a critical need for rigorous safeguarding measures within institutions that serve vulnerable populations, particularly children. As the hospital navigates this unsettling situation, it must not only address the immediate fallout but also reinforce its commitment to creating a safe environment free from exploitation. The trust placed in healthcare professionals is paramount, and any breaches can have far-reaching implications for both the institution’s reputation and the safety of those it serves.
