In a significant development, Toronto Police have charged Pierre O’Connor, 43, from Hamilton, with first-degree murder in connection with the unsolved killing of Patrick Santos, a case that has lingered in the shadows for nearly 17 years. This breakthrough follows the application of forensic genetic genealogy, a technique that has revolutionised cold case investigations, allowing law enforcement to trace suspects through DNA analysis linked to public genealogy databases.
A Gruesome Discovery
The tragic story of Patrick Santos began on the morning of September 17, 2006. His father made a horrifying discovery while letting the family dog outside — the lifeless body of his 21-year-old son in their backyard. Initial investigations revealed that Santos had been brutally attacked on his way to his home in Scarborough. With his hands bound, he suffered multiple stab wounds and ultimately suffocated after having his mouth taped shut.
Despite the collection of DNA evidence at the crime scene, progress in the investigation stalled for nearly two decades, with no viable suspects identified. This changed dramatically this week with the arrest of O’Connor, whose connection to the crime is still under scrutiny.
Forensic Genetic Genealogy Comes to the Fore
Detective Sergeant Stephen Smith, speaking at a recent press conference, acknowledged the pivotal role of forensic genetic genealogy (FGG) in reopening this cold case. He indicated that the relationship between Santos and O’Connor is still being investigated, with early indications suggesting a possible dispute between two groups may have led to the fatal encounter. Smith noted that the investigation remains active, as authorities suspect that additional individuals may have played a role in Santos’s death.
“IGG has transformed our approach to solving these longstanding cases,” Smith remarked. “It’s akin to finding a needle in a haystack; this technology effectively removes the haystack, presenting us with the needle that we can then confirm through DNA testing.”
The Road to Justice
The path to identifying O’Connor began in 2019 when Toronto Police adopted FGG for their cold-case investigations. By 2020, collaboration with the forensic research company Othram Inc. enabled officers to create a suspect profile from the evidence collected at the scene. Although the initial results did not immediately point to a suspect, they provided new leads that eventually led to O’Connor’s identification.
Since the use of genetic genealogy began in Toronto, police have successfully identified suspects in close to 40 cases and connected individuals to 89 unidentified human remains across Ontario. This innovative approach has breathed new life into cases that previously seemed hopeless.
