As the WNBA enters its 30th season, the Toronto Tempo are poised to make a significant splash in the league’s history. Following the recent ratification of a groundbreaking collective bargaining agreement that guarantees substantial pay increases and a US$7-million salary cap, the Tempo are ready to take to the court in a city that is rapidly becoming a hotspot for women’s professional sports. Situated in the heart of Exhibition Place, the 8,000-seat Coca-Cola Coliseum is now home not only to basketball but also to the newly launched Professional Women’s Hockey League team, the Toronto Sceptres.

A New Era for Women’s Sports in Toronto

Don Boyle, the CEO of Exhibition Place, expressed his enthusiasm for this transformative moment. “The building has a great intimacy to it. The energy is great,” he remarked, reflecting on the connection felt during the inaugural Sceptres games. “It felt like a bonding experience for people, with so many girls and women in hockey jackets and sweaters. It’s going to work really well for basketball, too.”

The Tempo’s new custom-designed court is one of the most visible upgrades as the team prepares for its WNBA debut. Over the past 18 months, the Tempo have implemented various enhancements to ensure their home matches provide a unique experience for fans. This includes innovative seating arrangements behind the baskets, featuring booth-style tables that promise a more interactive atmosphere.

State-of-the-Art Facilities for Players

The renovations extend far beyond what is seen by fans. The Tempo have invested in a cutting-edge climate-controlled storage system to protect their basketball court during the hockey season. Additionally, a bespoke locker room has been designed specifically for female athletes, focusing on comfort and functionality. Monica Wright Rogers, the Tempo’s general manager, praised the efforts of the team president, Teresa Resch, calling her vision a “phenomenal job of turning an idea into reality.”

“This space truly sets a new benchmark for athlete-first design in women’s professional sports,” Wright Rogers enthused. The locker room includes versatile areas that can serve various needs, from a nursing room to wellness facilities, highlighting the team’s commitment to player wellbeing.

Community Collaboration and Commitment

Ahead of the Tempo’s inaugural season, the venue has seen the addition of an industrial kitchen to cater to players and suite guests. Upgrades to the telecommunications infrastructure were also necessary to facilitate broadcasts of WNBA games. The collaboration between different stakeholders—from Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment to the Royal Winter Fair—allowed the Tempo to secure essential operational spaces. “Everybody came together and said, ‘We’re going to make space to make this happen. It’s the right thing to do,'” Boyle stated, emphasising the community spirit behind the project.

The Coca-Cola Coliseum has a storied history of hosting significant women’s sporting events, including the Canadian women’s rugby sevens team’s triumph at the 2015 Pan Am Games and numerous matches for the national soccer team. Now, the Tempo will add to that legacy, bringing fresh energy and excitement to the arena.

Shaping the Game Day Experience

Russell Kovshoff, who will direct the gameday presentation for the Tempo, is excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. With a wealth of experience from working with teams like the Toronto Raptors and the San Francisco 49ers, he is keen to create a unique atmosphere for fans. “You have an opportunity to create something for the first time ever from a blank canvas,” Kovshoff noted. His vision includes establishing traditions, chants, and a distinctive aesthetic for the Tempo’s court, ensuring that every game is a memorable experience.

Why it Matters

The launch of the Toronto Tempo signifies a pivotal moment not just for women’s basketball, but for the broader landscape of women’s sports in Canada. By investing in state-of-the-art facilities and fostering a community-centric environment, the Tempo are not only elevating the standard for female athletes but also inspiring a new generation of fans. Their debut in the WNBA comes at a time when women’s sports are gaining unprecedented visibility and support, marking a promising future for female athletes across the globe.
