Toronto’s esteemed Hospital for Sick Children, commonly known as SickKids, is grappling with a troubling situation following the arrest of one of its housekeeping staff members on multiple child exploitation charges. This incident marks a second alarming case within weeks, prompting the hospital to engage a third-party investigator to address the serious allegations.
Arrest Details and Charges
Antonio Alvin Dela Cruz, a 55-year-old employee at SickKids, has been charged with five offences, which include accessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material, as well as luring a minor under the age of 18 through telecommunication. The Toronto Police Service has confirmed that the investigation into Dela Cruz began in October 2024, leading to his arrest after allegations surfaced that he had sent inappropriate messages and explicit images to a 15-year-old via social media and messaging applications.
As the investigation unfolded, police executed a search warrant in the vicinity of Don Mills Road and Highway 401, where they seized several electronic devices and related documentation. Dela Cruz is set to appear in court on July 29.
Hospital’s Response
In light of the charges, SickKids swiftly placed Dela Cruz on leave upon learning the details and has since confirmed his resignation. Hospital president and CEO Ronald Cohn expressed profound disappointment in a statement, emphasising that the conduct outlined in the charges starkly contradicts the institution’s core values. Cohn stated, “It represents a profound breach of the trust that patients, families, staff and the public place in the people who work at SickKids.”
A spokesperson for SickKids, Sarah Warr, announced that the hospital has enlisted the services of KPMG, an auditing firm, to conduct a thorough review of its human resource and information technology practices. The aim is to bolster existing safeguards concerning recruitment, pre-employment screening, and ongoing employee monitoring, particularly with respect to acceptable technology use.
A Disturbing Pattern
SickKids is facing scrutiny not only for this latest arrest but also in connection with an earlier case involving one of its physicians. On July 21, 44-year-old Dilan Dissanayake, a staff rheumatologist, was arrested on charges of possessing and accessing child sexual abuse material. The hospital has clarified that, to its knowledge, the two accused individuals did not know or work with each other.
Defence lawyer Daniel Brown, representing Dissanayake, has refrained from making any comments regarding the case, which has raised alarm among staff and the community alike.
