For hundreds of years, pilgrims have flocked to the banks of the Osun River to seek healing, fertility and blessings from the Yoruba goddess who gives the waterway its name. This year, despite the river running a murky brown and contamination tests revealing dangerous levels of lead, mercury and cyanide, devotees in white clothing still gathered to pray, drink and bathe in the sacred waters during the annual Osun Osogbo festival.
The conflict between preserving a living cultural heritage and the environmental destruction caused by gold mining upstream has reached a critical juncture at this UNESCO World Heritage Site in southwestern Nigeria.
A Living Heritage Site Under Threat
The Osun-Osogbo sacred grove spans 75 hectares along the banks of the river that shares its name with the Yoruba deity of fertility, beauty and healing. UNESCO designated the site in 2005, recognising its significance as a living cultural landscape where ancient Yoruba traditions continue to be practised.
Until 2018, the river ran clear. Then gold mining operations began several miles upstream, introducing heavy metals and sediment into the watercourse. Today, the once-pristine waters that devotees believe possess spiritual and healing properties have been transformed into a toxic cocktail.
The annual Osun Osogbo festival draws worshippers from across Nigeria and the diaspora—including Brazil, Cuba and the United States—who regard the pilgrimage as essential to their spiritual practice. Women seeking to conceive, those hoping for prosperity or promotion, and pilgrims bearing offerings of fruit, kola nuts and sacrificial animals make their way to the riverbank to commune with the goddess.
The Price of Gold: Mining’s Devastating Toll
Osun State is rich in gold deposits, attracting small-scale and artisanal miners who often operate illegally due to lax enforcement. When they dig for gold along the 213-kilometre river, the runoff leaches back into the water, polluting it with dangerous substances.

In 2021, the social and environmental justice group Urban Alert launched the #SaveOsunRiver campaign and commissioned independent water testing, collecting samples from six locations along the river. The results confirmed what many had feared: unsafe levels of lead, mercury and cyanide, substances that pose particular dangers to children and pregnant women.
Authorities responded by arresting prospectors and closing some illegal mining sites. Campaigners, however, say these measures have proven inadequate. No comprehensive remediation plan has been implemented, no independent verification of water quality improvements has been conducted, and new mining sites continue to spring up—including one less than four miles from the sacred grove.
“That gap between announcement and action is itself part of the story,” says Anthony Adejuwon, Urban Alert’s founder and team lead.
Caught Between Faith and Health Risks
Despite official warnings that the water is unsafe for drinking, many devotees continued to drink from the river during this year’s festival. For them, the water is not ordinary H2O but a sacred substance imbued with divine power.
“We see it as an herbal concoction; it is not ordinary water to us. Any harmful substance in it has been removed by Osun,” says Yeye Omifunto Ojo, a devotee. Some worshippers and tourists arrived with containers to take the river water home, treating it as a blessed gift.
Adejuwon says the contamination puts devotees in an impossible position. “Between honouring a centuries-old tradition and facing real health risks that threaten the continuity of a living heritage practice at a site the world has formally recognised as globally significant”—this is the untenable choice now facing practitioners.
Yemi Elebuibon, a writer and chief Ifá priest of Osogbo, has been among those campaigning against the mining operations. “What we are telling them is for them to turn the mining in another direction so it can stop polluting Osun. Osun is naturally pure; it should not be polluted,” he explains.
Fashola Osungbemi Oladepo, an Osun priest at the shrine, shares these concerns about the pollution of the river, which is central to their traditions. “We’ve been complaining to the government, but it has to do with the state’s economy,” he acknowledges.
The dilemma extends beyond human health. Heavy metals persist in river sediments, accumulate in fish and aquatic vegetation, and biomagnify up the food chain. “This has implications not only for public health, but also for aquatic biodiversity, fisheries and the long-term economic resilience for communities that rely on the river ecosystem,” explains Sekinat Ojeniyi, an analyst at the business consultancy Africa Practice.
Among the pilgrims this year was Osunfunmito Eyeyemi, who returned to give thanks for answered prayers. Last year, the 31-year-old prayed to the goddess for a property and a car. “Here I am to give my own testimony because I am now a landlady and I drive my own car,” she says with evident joy. “There is nothing you ask that she will not do for you.”
Others came seeking similar blessings. Pippa Mistry-Norman, a 33-year-old from London, had spent six months planning her trip because she wanted to experience Yoruba spirituality firsthand. “A couple of my friends are Nigerian, and I sit opposite them every day. They have such a rich, deep and spiritual culture and I wanted to experience it first-hand, but you can’t do that from the office in London,” she explains.
The Path Forward: What Must Be Done
Experts and campaigners agree that reversing the contamination requires decisive government action. Adejuwon calls for authorities to independently characterise and map the full extent of the contamination along the river, which would enable a comprehensive, time-bound and well-funded remediation plan.

“The remediation cannot happen if mining does not stop,” he stresses. “They must not wait until it is too late, when the impact starts to reflect on people’s health.”
Ojeniyi offers a stark comparison that encapsulates the urgency of the situation. “A gold deposit can be mined over decades; a living cultural landscape that has evolved over more than 700 years cannot simply be restored once its ecological and spiritual integrity has been compromised.”
The question now is whether Nigeria’s authorities possess the political will to prioritise the preservation of a globally significant cultural heritage site over the economic gains from gold mining. For the devotees who have worshipped at the Osun River for centuries, the answer to that question will determine whether their sacred traditions can survive into the future.
