A Day of Celebration Turns into Chaos
The day began with excitement for 11-year-old Elias Sgouraditis and his classmates, who were celebrating the conclusion of Grade 5. However, their joyous outing took a dark turn when Elias heard a commotion nearby. “I saw people on the ground getting CPR,” he recounted, underscoring the shocking nature of the scene. His observations were soon followed by the arrival of ambulances, police, and even two helicopter air ambulances, indicating the severity of the situation. “I thought it must be pretty bad if there were helicopters,” Elias remarked.
Ken Hoff, assistant director of communications for the Coquitlam School District, confirmed that the students from Minnekhada Middle School were being evaluated for injuries that were serious but not life-threatening. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. during a field trip for Grades 6 and 7 students, and the local RCMP later confirmed that a total of 12 individuals were transported to the hospital, all of whom were reported to be stable.
Investigation Underway
Cpl. Carmen Kiener, spokesperson for the RCMP, stated that an initial investigation indicated no foul play was involved in the incident. The matter has since been handed over to WorkSafe B.C., which is collaborating with local authorities to ascertain the cause of the electrical failure. The waterpark’s management acknowledged that a “serious incident” had occurred near one of the rides, resulting in injuries to several guests, including children.
Elias observed that staff promptly closed the nearby slide following the incident, although the park remained operational for the most part. “There were two slides that were really close to it, and they didn’t want us seeing the people get taken away in stretchers,” he explained, highlighting the park’s efforts to maintain a sense of normalcy amidst the chaos. Fortunately, neither Elias nor his friends sustained injuries, although they were left shaken by the events.
Parental Concerns and Future Safety Measures
Katy Sgouraditis, Elias’s mother, expressed her relief that her son escaped harm but was left grappling with profound questions about safety. “Luckily nothing happened to Elias, but if it had, I would be super angry and really wanting some answers right now,” she said. After receiving communication from the school, she reflected on the irony of what should have been a fun celebration for young children turning into a critical emergency. “These are little kids that get sent to the waterslides for a really fun end of school celebration, and they get electrocuted, like what the heck,” she added, encapsulating the bewilderment felt by many parents.
BC Emergency Health Services responded swiftly to the incident, dispatching ambulances and advanced care paramedics to the scene. In light of the incident, Cultus Lake Waterpark announced it would temporarily close to facilitate a thorough and independent investigation. “We are fully co-operating with the authorities through the process of investigation and assessment. We are determined to ensure that something like this does not happen within our facility again,” the waterpark stated.
Technical Safety B.C., responsible for overseeing safety compliance in electrical systems, is also involved in the investigation. Their spokesperson, Lindsay Byers, confirmed that safety officers were dispatched to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the site. BC Hydro, the provincial utility, indicated that preliminary findings pointed to an electrical issue originating on the customer’s side rather than from their infrastructure.
