A devastating fire at a Bangkok bar has claimed the lives of at least 30 individuals, with authorities now investigating potential safety violations that may have contributed to the disaster. Survivors have recounted harrowing experiences of locked doors and inadequate emergency signage, raising serious questions about the establishment’s safety protocols.
Investigating the Inferno
The blaze erupted late on Sunday night at Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao, a venue known for its live music. Initial reports suggest that the fire ignited due to a short circuit in an air conditioning unit, which subsequently cut power across the bar. The rapid spread of flames, exacerbated by flammable decorative materials, has been described as catastrophic. Police General Kittiratt Phanphet stated that the circumstances surrounding the fire reflect a “lack of caution and disregard for the safety of the patrons.”
As emergency services arrived, they found many victims trapped in the restrooms, where they had sought refuge but were unable to escape. Out of the 30 confirmed fatalities, authorities have identified 27 victims, while over 70 others sustained injuries, with 24 in critical condition.
Survivors’ Accounts Highlight Safety Failures
Witnesses have painted a grim picture of the venue’s safety measures. Phatsara Khamloet, a patron who visited the bar in May, described navigating a “winding route” to the bathroom, indicating poor layout and signage. Fire safety expert Busakorn Saensuk noted that the only door near the restrooms was locked, and the main entrances were partially blocked by furniture. “Customers would instinctively have run towards the back where the restrooms were, but once there, they found themselves trapped,” she explained.
The lack of illuminated emergency signs is particularly concerning. According to Saensuk, had these signs been operational, patrons might have noticed the locked exit and sought alternative routes.
The Role of Flammable Materials
The use of highly combustible materials in the bar’s decor has also come under scrutiny. The stage, adorned with plastic flowers and foam, quickly became engulfed in flames as the fire erupted. Worsak Kanok Nukulchai, a structural engineering professor, warned that many victims likely succumbed to toxic smoke inhalation before the flames reached them. The fire’s initial combustion would have produced deadly gases, including carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide.
Despite being registered as a “restaurant with live music,” which does not mandate the use of fire-retardant materials, the venue’s safety practices are now being questioned. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has announced a review of regulations governing construction and decoration standards for venues across the city.
A Troubling History
The owner of Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao previously managed another pub in Thailand’s Yasothon province, which was destroyed by fire in December 2019. Fortunately, that incident occurred during the day, resulting in no casualties. The recurrence of such tragedies raises alarm bells regarding the enforcement of safety standards within the hospitality industry.
