A devastating drone strike in Sudan’s White Nile province has left at least 17 individuals dead, predominantly schoolgirls. This tragic incident occurred on Wednesday in the village of Shukeiri, where an explosive-laden drone, attributed to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), targeted a secondary school and a healthcare facility. The attack has intensified concerns about the escalating violence in a nation already ravaged by nearly three years of conflict.
Attack Details
The deadly strike has been confirmed by Dr Musa al-Majeri, director of Douiem Hospital, the nearest medical centre to Shukeiri. He reported that among the deceased were two teachers and a healthcare worker, while at least ten others sustained injuries, with three girls suffering severe wounds. Two of the injured were operated on at the hospital, whereas the third was transferred to the capital, Khartoum, for further treatment.
The Sudan Doctors Network, an organisation monitoring the humanitarian crisis, was the first to report on the strike. They emphasised that there was no military presence in Shukeiri, asserting that the attack was entirely directed at civilians. Dr al-Majeri and the medical group have both attributed the strike to the RSF, though the paramilitary group has yet to respond to requests for comment.
Context of the Conflict
This latest incident is part of a broader pattern of violence that has characterised the ongoing war in Sudan since April 2023. The conflict erupted from a power struggle between the military and the RSF, leading to widespread chaos and loss of life. According to United Nations estimates, over 40,000 people have perished as a result of the fighting, though humanitarian organisations suggest the actual toll may be significantly higher.

Dr Razan Al-Mahdi, a spokesperson for the Sudan Doctors Network, condemned the Shukeiri strike as a continuation of the “horrific violations” perpetrated by the RSF. She highlighted that in the days leading up to the drone attack, several civilian facilities had been targeted, including student dormitories and even a power station.
