A devastating train accident has struck southern Spain, leaving at least 39 people dead and over 170 injured. The incident occurred on Sunday when two high-speed trains derailed in the region, according to authorities.

The crash took place near the city of Cordoba, with one of the trains travelling from Madrid to Seville and the other from Malaga to the capital. Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene, and rescue efforts are still ongoing as authorities work to determine the exact cause of the derailment.

“It was a terrible scene. There was debris everywhere, and we could hear the cries of the injured passengers,” said local resident Maria Fernandez, who witnessed the aftermath of the accident.

The regional government of Andalusia has declared three days of mourning in the wake of the tragedy. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also expressed his condolences, stating that the “whole country is in shock” over the devastating incident.

Investigators are currently examining the tracks and the trains themselves to establish the circumstances that led to the derailment. Initial reports suggest that the trains may have collided, but officials have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the crash.

“Our priority right now is to provide support and medical care to the victims and their families,” said Cordoba’s mayor, José María Bellido. “We are working closely with the authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and to determine what went wrong.”

The Spanish railway operator, Renfe, has pledged its full cooperation with the ongoing investigation. The company has also set up a helpline for families and friends of the passengers involved in the accident.

This tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the Spanish community and the nation as a whole. As the investigation continues, the focus will be on understanding the causes of the derailment and ensuring that measures are taken to prevent such devastating accidents from occurring in the future.
