In a devastating incident caused by the relentless downpour gripping southern China, four individuals have lost their lives, and six remain unaccounted for after a pick-up truck plunged into a river swollen by torrential rains. This calamity struck in Guangxi, where authorities are grappling with the effects of the country’s first major rainfall event of 2026, which has prompted widespread emergency responses across affected regions.

The incident unfolded on Saturday as the truck, transporting 15 workers to a sweet potato farm, encountered a low bridge and fell into the turbulent waters of the river in Huanjiang Maonan Autonomous County. State broadcaster CCTV reported that five of the passengers were successfully rescued, but the search continues for those still missing.

In the wake of this tragedy, local authorities activated emergency flood protocols in both Guangdong province and Guizhou in the southwest. With forecasts predicting sustained heavy rainfall from 15 to 19 May, officials have been on high alert, particularly after central and eastern China experienced severe downpours over the preceding weekend. The National Meteorological Centre has warned that the heavy rain system is expected to shift east and south over the subsequent days, raising concerns about increased risks of mountain torrents, flooding in smaller rivers, and significant urban waterlogging. In light of these threats, Jingzhou city in central Hubei province has suspended work and business activities, closed tourist attractions, and halted outdoor classes in schools to ensure public safety.

Footage broadcasted by CCTV revealed rescuers navigating submerged streets in boats, highlighting the extent of the flooding. In nearby Yichang, recent rainfalls have reportedly shattered a 36-year record, underscoring the severity of this meteorological event.

The situation is reminiscent of the severe flooding that afflicted Qinzhou in April, when an unusual rainstorm forced over 200 residents to evacuate. As communities rally to respond to the ongoing crisis, the need for effective flood management and disaster preparedness remains paramount.
