In a deeply distressing incident, at least 17 individuals, predominantly schoolgirls, lost their lives in a drone strike on a secondary school and a healthcare facility in the village of Shukeiri, located in Sudan’s White Nile province. This attack, attributed to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has intensified concerns about the ongoing humanitarian crisis stemming from nearly three years of conflict in the country.

The assault occurred on Wednesday, resulting in not only fatalities but also leaving at least ten people injured, according to Dr Musa al-Majeri, the director of Douiem hospital, the nearest significant medical centre. Among the wounded, three girls suffered severe injuries, necessitating surgical interventions for two, while the third was rushed to the capital, Khartoum, for further treatment.
The Sudan Doctors Network, which monitors the war’s effects, was among the first to report the attack, identifying the victims as including two educators and a healthcare professional. Both Dr al-Majeri and the medical network have unequivocally blamed the RSF for this tragic event. Despite requests for comment, the RSF has remained silent.
A Pattern of Violence
Dr Razan Al-Mahdi, a spokesperson for the medical group, condemned the incident as a continuation of the RSF’s violent campaign in the region. She remarked that this latest strike follows a series of assaults on civilian infrastructure, including a student dormitory and a power station, within a mere 48 hours.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of violence that has plagued Sudan since April 2023, when a power struggle between the military and the RSF evolved into widespread conflict. This turmoil has led to an estimated death toll exceeding 40,000, according to United Nations figures, although humanitarian organisations suggest the actual number could be significantly higher.

Reports indicate that at least 6,000 individuals were killed in just three days during this assault, according to the UN’s human rights office.
