A devastating pre-monsoon storm wreaked havoc in northern India, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, resulting in the loss of at least 111 lives and leaving more than 50 individuals injured. This unexpected weather event, characterised by heavy rain, hail, and fierce winds, swept through five districts on Wednesday, causing widespread destruction and raising concerns about the increasing unpredictability of climate patterns in the region.

As the storm rolled in, it uprooted trees and billboards, crushing vehicles and disrupting mobile networks, which severely hampered emergency response efforts. Initially, state authorities reported 89 fatalities linked to the storm’s ferocity, but this figure was later revised to 111, underscoring the extent of the tragedy. Officials attributed many of the deaths to falling trees and collapsing buildings, with local rescues revealing the full scale of the disaster.

Ram Kishore, a local resident, described a swift descent into chaos: “The storm came suddenly and the sky turned completely dark within minutes.” Reports from Bhadohi district, which bore the brunt of the storm, indicated that at least 16 people lost their lives in various incidents. Savitri Devi, a villager, shared a harrowing experience of narrowly escaping as her family’s home was battered by the winds.
Local Impact and Government Response
In Fatehpur, the storm claimed nine lives, with additional injuries reported, while in Budaun, five fatalities included two young girls who perished when the mud wall of their shelter collapsed. Other incidents included a woman in Tark Paroli village who lost her life when a tree fell onto the shelter she was in.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has called for swift action, instructing district officials to expedite relief efforts within 24 hours and ensuring that compensation is provided for the losses. He also emphasised that negligence in response efforts would not be tolerated and mandated thorough assessments by relevant departments and insurance companies.
