A devastating summer storm has wreaked havoc across northern India, leaving at least 111 people dead and more than 50 injured in Uttar Pradesh. The unanticipated onslaught of heavy rain, hail, and lightning, which struck on Wednesday, has brought the region’s vulnerability to violent weather into sharp focus, particularly during a time typically marked by intense heat rather than such tempestuous storms.

Sudden Onslaught of Nature’s Fury

The storm, which swept through five districts of Uttar Pradesh, resulted in widespread destruction, uprooting trees, toppling billboards, and severely disrupting mobile networks. This chaos has hindered rescue and relief operations, complicating efforts to assess the full extent of the damage. Initial reports indicated that 89 individuals had lost their lives due to storm-related incidents; however, this figure was later revised upwards to 111 as more details emerged.

Narendra N. Srivastava, a state official, confirmed that many fatalities were linked to falling trees and the collapse of structures, highlighting the storm’s deadly impact on vulnerable communities. Emergency teams have been mobilised to address the urgent needs of those affected, with significant destruction reported to homes, crops, and power infrastructure, particularly in rural districts.

Global Expressions of Sympathy

The tragedy has drawn international attention, with condolences pouring in from leaders around the globe. Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his sorrow in a message to Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, extending his sympathies to the families of those lost and wishing a swift recovery to the injured. Similarly, the UAE foreign ministry and Singapore’s High Commissioner to India, Simon Wong, voiced their shock and support for the victims and their families.

Residents of the affected areas have shared harrowing accounts of the storm’s sudden onset. In Prayagraj district, Ram Kishore recounted how the sky darkened in minutes, prompting panic as strong winds uprooted roofs and trees. “We could hear trees falling throughout the evening,” he recalled, underscoring the confusion and fear that enveloped local communities.

Hard-Hit Areas and Heroic Responses

Bhadohi district experienced some of the most severe impacts of the storm, with at least 16 fatalities reported. Local police noted multiple incidents leading to injuries and loss of life. Savitri Devi, a villager, described the narrow escape her family had when their mud house was damaged, highlighting the perilous conditions faced by many during the storm.

In Fatehpur, nine lives were claimed, including a woman whose home succumbed to the storm’s fury. Additional district magistrate Avinash Tripathi provided details on the casualties, revealing that the
