In a heartbreaking turn of events, a young British man who had recently been released from a Dubai prison has died in a car crash in North London. Marwaan Mohamed Hussein, 20, has admitted to causing the death of 19-year-old Marcus Fakana through dangerous driving.
The incident occurred just three months after Fakana’s release from a Dubai jail, where he had been serving a sentence for a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl. Fakana, from Tottenham, North London, had been visiting his parents in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the summer of 2024 when the relationship came to light. He spent around a year in prison before being granted a royal pardon by Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
On the early morning of October 3rd last year, Fakana was a passenger in a BMW that was being pursued by Metropolitan Police. The vehicle crashed into a lorry in Tottenham, and Fakana was pronounced dead at the hospital. Another passenger was also seriously injured in the collision.
Hussein, of Argyle Road, Tottenham, pleaded guilty to causing Fakana’s death by dangerous driving, as well as causing serious injury by dangerous driving to another passenger. He also admitted to driving without a valid license or insurance at the time of the crash.
Radha Sterling, chief executive of the campaign group Detained in Dubai, expressed her devastation at the news. “Marcus spent the majority of this year in a Dubai prison which no doubt caused him long-lasting mental anguish,” she said. “It’s sad that of all of 2025, he was only free for the three months from the 3rd of July until the 3rd of October.”
Hussein is set to submit a basis for his guilty plea, and a sentencing date will be determined at a hearing on February 27th. The tragic incident has once again highlighted the complex legal landscape faced by individuals caught up in the UAE’s justice system.
