U.S. safety authorities have launched an investigation into a devastating incident at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, where an Air Canada Express jet collided with a fire truck on Sunday night, resulting in the deaths of both pilots. The CRJ 900 aircraft, which was en route from Montreal with 72 passengers and four crew members, crashed into the emergency vehicle while on the runway. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has raised concerns about potential communication failures, staffing issues, and fatigue among air traffic controllers as possible factors in the accident.

The tragic collision claimed the lives of Antoine Forest, 27, from Coteau-du-Lac, Quebec, and 26-year-old Mackenzie Gunther from Ontario, who were the pilots on board. The flight was operated by Jazz Aviation, a contractor for Air Canada. During a press briefing on Tuesday, NTSB chair Jennifer Homendy reported that the fire truck lacked a transponder, rendering it invisible to the control tower. Additionally, a radio message from the vehicle just prior to the crash was indecipherable due to interference from another transmission.

Friends recall him as an enthusiastic individual who had just begun to build a life with his new wife, making the tragedy all the more poignant.
Runway Incursions: A Growing Concern
The LaGuardia incident is part of a troubling trend in aviation safety. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has documented a near doubling of runway incursions since 2010, with the number expected to reach 639 by 2024. While many of these incidents are classified as low-risk, experts warn that even a single collision could have devastating consequences.
Homendy has called for improvements in ground traffic control systems at airports. She noted that while other airports have implemented transponders on emergency vehicles, the systems at LaGuardia failed to provide adequate visibility for the fire truck involved in the crash. “They should have all the information. This is 2026,” she asserted, highlighting the urgent need for technological advancements to enhance aviation safety.
