In a heartbreaking incident that has left the community of Prince Edward Island in mourning, 23-year-old paramedic Jenna Croucher was killed in a car accident earlier this week. Croucher was one of three victims in a collision between an ambulance and a transport truck on a New Brunswick highway, just west of the Confederation Bridge. Her father, Robin Croucher, the province’s Education Minister, has shared poignant memories of his daughter, highlighting her warmth and ability to connect with others.
A Life Cut Short
Jenna Croucher’s untimely death has prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes from colleagues, friends, and family. Described by her father as a “rare beacon of light,” Jenna had a unique gift for forging connections, whether among dignitaries or individuals in need. Robin Croucher, himself a former paramedic, emphasised how Jenna’s compassion and empathy made her stand out.
“She had the remarkable ability to find common ground with everyone she encountered,” he said. “That’s just what made her so special.”
In addition to her professional dedication, Jenna was a loving sister and a nurturing figure to her younger siblings, Lesley and Evan. Her father noted how she appreciated life’s simple pleasures, often enjoying nature and sharing moments with loved ones. Jenna was also engaged to her fiancée, Morgan Roggeveen, with plans to marry in September.
“She cherished all those small things in life that take us 40 to 50 years to figure out,” Robin Croucher remarked, reflecting her deep appreciation for life.
Tributes from Colleagues
Jenna’s colleagues have also shared fond memories, highlighting her reliability and kindness. Priscilla Currie, a fellow paramedic, expressed her admiration on social media, recalling how Jenna’s friendship was a constant source of support.
“I never had to ask Jenna to be a great friend – she just was. I never had to ask Jenna to love my kids – she just did,” Currie wrote, a testament to Jenna’s nurturing nature.
Corey Frizzell, a town councillor in Cornwall, P.E.I., praised Jenna’s commitment to her role as a paramedic. “Jenna had a deep devotion to service, providing care and support to those in need,” he stated. “She genuinely loved people and had so much to offer this world.”
Honouring Fallen Heroes
As the community comes together to honour Jenna’s memory, her father has announced plans to lead a procession to bring her body back to Prince Edward Island from a hospital in Saint John, New Brunswick. The procession will include fire trucks and other vehicles, a fitting tribute to a young woman dedicated to emergency service.
The procession will also pay respects to Mike MacKenzie, Jenna’s colleague who was driving the ambulance at the time of the accident. MacKenzie was a well-respected volunteer and recently celebrated 20 years with Island EMS. The third victim, a patient being transported in the ambulance, has not yet been identified.
In a show of solidarity, paramedics from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia have volunteered to assist with responsibilities on Prince Edward Island, allowing local paramedics to attend memorial services and funerals for their fallen colleagues.
Why it Matters
The tragic loss of Jenna Croucher is not just a personal loss for her family and friends; it is a stark reminder of the risks faced by those in emergency services and the profound impact they have on their communities. As tributes continue to pour in, it is clear that Jenna’s legacy of compassion and service will resonate within the hearts of many, inspiring a renewed appreciation for the selfless dedication of paramedics everywhere. Her story underscores the importance of community support during times of grief and the enduring bonds formed through acts of kindness and care.
