The earthquake struck at approximately 3:30 PM local time, located about 65 miles (105 km) northwest of Mantua, Cuba, with a depth of 16 miles. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), this tremor represents the most significant seismic activity in the region since a 6.0-magnitude earthquake in 1880 near San Cristóbal, Cuba.
In Florida, where earthquakes are a rarity, residents experienced a brief but alarming shaking. Britnee Jeffries from Tampa Bay recounted her experience to local news outlet WFLA, stating, “It was very strong and it was honestly kind of scary. I wasn’t really worried in a sense that I thought it was here because we don’t get earthquakes here. But at the same time, I was worried because we don’t get them here.”
Barbara German, another Tampa Bay resident, expressed her surprise, saying, “It was kind of alarming at first because I really didn’t know what it was.” The unexpected tremors left many residents bewildered, with some even fearing for their safety.

Bobby Shea, a St Petersburg resident, described the sensation: “I’m in my chair and it started literally going left and right … The metals on my walls kept clamping together and I’m like, ‘Holy smokes, like this is weird. This is a concrete building.’” Many individuals shared similar accounts of their surroundings shifting unexpectedly, leading to a wave of unease.
Kelsey Pope, who was working from home, initially mistook the tremors for her dog moving around. She recounted, “At first, I thought it was just my dog Archie moving around, but then I noticed my desk and even the water in my Nespresso machine sloshing back and forth.” Her experience highlighted the suddenness of the quake, leaving residents grappling with the unfamiliar sensation of an earthquake.

Despite the widespread impact of the earthquake, the US Tsunami Warning Center quickly assured the public that there was no tsunami threat for the eastern coast of the United States or eastern Canada. “Based on earthquake information and historic tsunami records, the earthquake is not expected to generate a tsunami,” the centre stated.
