Emotional Homecoming

Veteran broadcaster Trevor Nelson has made his comeback on BBC Radio 2 following successful surgery to remove a brain tumour, delivering an emotionally charged return that underscored the profound connection between presenter and audience.

The 62-year-old, who normally hosts the weekday afternoon slot from 2pm to 4pm, opened his Monday broadcast by paying tribute to the overwhelming support he received during his recovery, describing it as instrumental in helping him through his “darkest moments.”

“I’ve missed sitting in this seat, I’ve missed being in this studio – being on the eighth floor of BBC Broadcasting House, being on the best radio station in the world, and missed you most of all. Boy, have I missed you guys!” Nelson told listeners.

A Difficult Summer

Nelson’s return follows what he described as an “emotional and very difficult” period, during which he underwent surgery after doctors discovered the tumour in June. The presenter took a sudden hiatus at the time, later confirming in an August video message that his “world was turned upside down” by the diagnosis.

A Difficult Summer

Speaking candidly about his experience, Nelson likened his ordeal to being “hijacked” over the summer, adding with characteristic humour: “Someone’s paid the ransom at last, freed me, and freed me.”

He continued: “It’s been an emotional and very difficult summer for me. But I’ve got through with a lot of help from close friends and family, my management, my wife Pri has been amazing and everybody close to me.”

Phased Return to Broadcasting

Rather than immediately resuming his full broadcasting duties, Nelson is gradually increasing his workload over the coming weeks. His schedule will build incrementally before he returns to his regular presenting commitments from Monday 28 September.

This week he hosts two shows (Monday and Wednesday 9 September); three next week (Monday 14, Wednesday 16, and Friday 18); and four the following week (Monday 21, Tuesday 22, Thursday 24, and Friday 25).

During his return show, Nelson paid tribute to his colleagues, describing the Radio 2 team as “like a family,” and expressed disappointment at missing the upcoming Radio 2 in the Park festival in Stirling.

He also highlighted the unexpected solace he found in listener support, stating: “It feels weird saying that people who I don’t know have helped me massively. All the listeners, all the love has been overwhelming and insane. In my darkest moments, it really did help me through.”

Career Highlights

Nelson’s extensive career in broadcasting spans decades and includes presenting roles across Kiss FM, Radio 1, Radio 2, and MTV. His return to Radio 2 marks another milestone in a journey that has seen him become one of the UK’s most recognisable voices in popular music broadcasting.

Career Highlights

His choice of music for the comeback show – John Sebastian’s “Welcome Back” followed by Stevie Wonder’s “Uptight (Everything’s Alright)” – set a tone of optimism and renewal that resonated with both longtime fans and new listeners tuning in to hear of his recovery.

Why it Matters

Trevor Nelson’s return to Radio 2 represents more than just a personal triumph – it serves as a powerful reminder of the vital role that public service broadcasting plays in our national wellbeing. In an era where mental health awareness is increasingly prominent, Nelson’s openness about his struggle and the community support that sustained him offers a compelling example of how media figures can humanise serious health challenges. His gradual return also demonstrates the BBC’s commitment to supporting staff through difficult periods, setting a standard for workplace compassion that extends far beyond the broadcasting industry. For listeners, his comeback provides comfort and continuity during uncertain times, reinforcing the enduring bond between presenter and audience that lies at the heart of radio’s unique power to connect.
