In a significant legal move, two police officers involved in the defence of the US Capitol during the January 6 insurrection have initiated a lawsuit against former President Donald Trump. Their complaint centres around Trump’s newly proposed $1.776 billion “anti-weaponization” fund, which they allege unlawfully rewards those who participated in the riot.
Allegations of Presidential Corruption
Retired Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn and Metropolitan Police officer Daniel Hodges filed their lawsuit in a Washington DC district court, asserting that the fund effectively operates as a slush fund benefitting insurrectionists and their associates. The officers argue that this initiative, which Trump claims will compensate individuals he believes have been unfairly targeted by the justice system, constitutes a blatant act of presidential corruption.
“In the most brazen act of presidential corruption this century, President Donald J Trump has created a $1.776 billion taxpayer-funded slush fund to finance the insurrectionists and paramilitary groups that commit violence in his name,” the lawsuit states. The officers have expressed that the fund not only undermines justice but also poses an increased risk to their safety, as they continue to face threats in the wake of the Capitol attack.
Officers’ Experiences During the Insurrection
Both Dunn and Hodges were pivotal in the defence of the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
