As negotiations between Air Transat and its pilots’ union reach a critical juncture, the Canadian airline has announced it will begin cancelling flights starting on Monday. This precautionary measure comes in response to a 72-hour strike notice issued by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), the union representing the airline’s 750 pilots.

The union has stated that 99% of its members have voted to authorise a strike if a new contract agreement is not reached by Wednesday. The pilots have been negotiating for nearly a year to replace their current 2015 contract, seeking to secure “industry-standard pay, benefits, work rules, and job security”.

In a statement, ALPA representative Captain Bradley Small said, “No pilot wants to strike, but Air Transat management has left us no choice. Months of unproductive bargaining ends now. If we cannot reach an agreement, management will be responsible for every cancelled flight and stranded passenger.”

However, Air Transat has described the strike notice as “premature”, with a human resources officer, Julie Lamontagne, accusing the union of showing “indifference toward Transat” in its “reckless decision” to authorise a strike that “does not reflect the state of negotiations”.

Lamontagne stated that the airline has been negotiating in good faith and has made “generous offers”, but the union’s actions have forced the company to take drastic measures. Air Transat said it will gradually suspend operations on Monday, with a complete suspension of all flights on Tuesday, in an effort to prevent the consequences of a sudden, unplanned interruption.

This latest development comes just a year after Air Transat’s flight dispatchers narrowly avoided a strike in 2024 after contract negotiations with their union stalled. The potential disruption to the airline’s operations could have significant consequences for both the company and its passengers.

As the clock ticks down to Wednesday’s deadline, all eyes will be on the negotiations between Air Transat and its pilots’ union, with both sides vying to reach a compromise and avoid the looming threat of a strike.
