Twelve students from Minnekhada Middle School in Port Coquitlam are recovering in hospital following an electrical mishap during a school trip to Cultus Lake Waterpark in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley. The Grade 6 and 7 pupils were part of a celebratory outing when the event unfolded, leading to serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to officials.

Incident Overview

On Monday morning, around 11:20 AM, emergency services were alerted to reports of multiple injuries at the popular water park, located east of Vancouver. Initial reports inaccurately stated that ten students were affected, but a spokesperson for the Coquitlam School District, Ken Hoff, confirmed that twelve individuals were injured. All those affected were promptly transported to local hospitals for treatment.

BC Hydro, the provincial utility, has indicated that preliminary investigations point to an electrical fault arising from customer equipment rather than the utility’s infrastructure. “The safety of the public is our top priority,” the company stated, pledging full cooperation with the water park’s management and the ongoing investigation.

Eyewitness Accounts

Among the witnesses was 11-year-old Elias Sgouraditis, who was enjoying his own end-of-year celebrations nearby. “I saw people on the ground getting CPR,” Elias recounted, describing a scene of chaos that unfolded just a short distance from where he was playing. His initial shock deepened when he noticed the rapid arrival of ambulances, police, and even two air ambulances, prompting him to think, “I thought it must be pretty bad if there were helicopters.”

While the water park staff took immediate action by closing the affected slide, much of the park continued its operations as normal. Elias noted that the staff restricted access to certain rides to shield guests from witnessing the aftermath. Despite the incident, he and his friends resumed their activities after the emergency response teams departed.

Parental Concerns

The incident has raised significant concerns among parents, particularly Katy Sgouraditis, Elias’s mother. “Luckily nothing happened to Elias, but if it had, I would be super angry and really wanting some answers right now,” she expressed, highlighting the emotional turmoil of parents faced with such unexpected danger. She received communication from the school informing her that no students from Minnekhada were severely harmed, but the nature of the event left her grappling with the potential risks associated with such outings.

The water park released a statement acknowledging the incident, describing it as a “serious incident” occurring in a queueing area. While details were sparse, they confirmed that several guests, including children, had sustained injuries. The park has since announced a temporary closure for a 48-hour period to facilitate a thorough investigation.

Investigations Underway

Technical Safety BC, the regulatory body overseeing safety compliance in electrical systems, has launched its own investigation into the incident. Spokesperson Lindsay Byers noted that safety officers have arrived on site to conduct a detailed assessment, ensuring that such hazards will be diligently addressed in the future.

As inquiries unfold, Corporal Carmen Kiener from the RCMP’s Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment confirmed that authorities do not suspect any malicious intent behind the incident. The case has been handed over to WorkSafeBC for further examination, with continued support from local police.

Why it Matters

This unfortunate incident underscores the critical importance of safety protocols at recreational facilities, especially those frequented by children. As communities rally around the affected students, there is a shared recognition of the need for stringent safety measures to prevent such occurrences in the future. The emotional and physical well-being of young people must always be a priority, and incidents like this highlight the ongoing challenges in ensuring that recreational spaces remain safe environments for all.
