He advocated for intensified drainage maintenance, culvert inspections, and vegetation management in areas historically prone to weather-related failures.
“The distinction between maintenance and adaptation is critical,” Koliousis noted. “While clearing a drain prepares us for the next storm, redesigning or enhancing the drainage system’s capacity is essential for the coming decades.”
In light of these challenges, Network Rail has committed to investing heavily in resilience measures. A spokesperson affirmed that preparations are underway for a warm, wet winter consistent with climate change predictions. The organisation is currently overseeing a substantial £2.6 billion programme focused on track maintenance and renewals, which includes enhancements to drainage systems and earthworks, as well as the implementation of predictive technologies to preemptively identify and mitigate risks.
