In a significant escalation of maritime hostilities, Ukraine has confirmed it struck five vessels engaged in what it termed illegal activities in the Sea of Azov. This operation coincides with President Vladimir Putin’s upcoming address at a major economic summit in St Petersburg, following Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s proposal for direct negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict.

Ukraine’s Naval Operations

The Ukrainian armed forces announced that their drone units successfully targeted five ships involved in the illicit transport of Ukrainian grain, alongside military supplies and fuel. According to Robert Brovdi, the commander of Ukraine’s drone forces, these vessels were described as “illegally loitering” in the ports of Mariupol and Berdyansk, as well as adjacent waters that Ukraine designates as “temporarily occupied territories.” Brovdi noted that the ships had obscured their identifying features to facilitate their operations of quietly appropriating Ukrainian resources. While the strikes indicate a robust naval response, Brovdi did not report any casualties associated with these attacks.

Simultaneously, Ukraine confirmed that one of its naval drones detonated off the coast of Romania. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported from this incident. However, the explosion raises questions regarding the escalating military activities in the Black Sea region, particularly in light of recent reports regarding casualties from drone strikes on ships in the area.

Rising Casualties from Airstrikes

In a tragic turn of events, Ukrainian authorities reported that at least 13 individuals lost their lives and over 70 sustained injuries due to Russian drone strikes across various regions, including Kyiv, Kherson, Kharkiv, and others. Among the deceased were four people killed in an attack on a dairy factory situated near the capital.
