Josef Buttigieg’s foray into farming was not in his original plans, yet life often leads us down unexpected paths. Buttigieg, who holds a PhD in neurophysiology from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, was initially drawn to the Lumsden area of Saskatchewan for a teaching position. In search of a lifestyle that would offer a slower pace, he envisioned owning a small acreage. “The farm was supposed to be an acreage,” he recalls. “How some people have cottages, I wanted to have a farm because you can do much more with a farm than you can do with a lakeside acreage.”
As he settled in, Buttigieg began with modest aspirations, acquiring a few animals. However, as local interest grew, so too did his ambitions. A simple inquiry from friends about raising chickens catalysed a much larger commitment to farming. “One thing led to another,” he says, reflecting on how his journey unfolded organically.

The transition from academic life to farm ownership took a pivotal turn when Buttigieg opened his farm for tours in 2018, initially for his daughter’s friends. This initiative was, he admits, completely unplanned. “I thought, ‘We’ll just do this for fun. Some gas money-slash-beer money on the side, this will be great,’” he explains. However, the response was overwhelming, with visitors eager to experience farm life firsthand.
“What started as a casual venture quickly transformed into something much bigger,” Buttigieg notes. With demand surging, he embraced the idea of offering tours, which now attract hundreds of guests each week. His farm, now home to over 300 animals—including sheep, birds, rabbits, and alpacas—has become a local attraction, offering a petting zoo, hayrides, and various events.

Buttigieg is deeply committed to ensuring that his farm remains accessible and affordable for all. He has taken steps to ethically price goods and make activities, such as hayrides, wheelchair-friendly.
