The study suggests that engaging in social activities for between 30 minutes to two hours significantly boosts happiness. Work, too, plays a role, with up to six hours of productive engagement proving beneficial. However, the research also indicates that exceeding these thresholds can lead to diminishing returns. Interestingly, activities such as housework and passive leisure, particularly watching television, did not correlate with a better-than-average day.

While the results are compelling, Folk warns against interpreting them as a strict formula for happiness. “We can’t conclude that any of these activities causally lead to people having better days,” he explains. There’s an awareness that individuals who report good days may inherently choose activities that align with their positive feelings. Moreover, not everyone can afford to dedicate their time to pursuits they love.
Despite these limitations, Folk’s study encourages a shift in daily habits. He advocates for increased time spent socialising and engaging in active leisure rather than passive activities. “I hope our article helps people think more about the trade-offs in their daily life, and the marginal benefits of spending time on different activities,” he adds.
