The UK is currently experiencing a remarkable heatwave that is nearing the two-week mark, with southern regions enduring a staggering 13 consecutive days above the established heatwave criteria. This extreme weather event, marked by a peak temperature of 30.6°C (87.1°F) in Merryfield, Somerset, is not only notable for its duration but also for the intensity of heat that has gripped the nation, raising pressing questions about the impact of climate change on our weather patterns.

A Record-Breaking Summer

The ongoing heatwave has already set records, with the UK witnessing its longest stretch of days at or above 30°C since 2006. Cities such as Bournemouth and Heathrow have seen temperatures consistently above 26°C and 28°C, respectively, for nearly two weeks. While a slight influx of cooler air is expected from the north this weekend, some areas may still experience elevated temperatures for a few more days. However, the prospect of surpassing the 1976 record of 16 days at or above 30°C seems unlikely.

This summer has already been a standout in terms of meteorological records, breaking monthly temperature averages for both May and June by over two degrees. Interestingly, this marks the third heatwave of 2023, echoing the patterns observed last year. As we approach the mid-point of July, the UK has recorded 12 days with temperatures exceeding 30°C, in stark contrast to last July’s four-day streak.

The Science Behind the Heat

The persistence of this heatwave can be attributed to several interlinked factors. Climate change is at the forefront, with the UK experiencing an average temperature increase of 1.33°C since 1961-1990. However, extreme temperature days have escalated even more dramatically, particularly in Greater London, where the average rise is 4.5°C, according to the Met Office.

Notably, some areas in southern England, like Wisley in Surrey, have gone without rainfall for an entire month, highlighting a significant dryness alongside the heat. In contrast, although parts of Northern Ireland and Wales have also experienced heat, the intensity and duration have not been as pronounced.

This year has also seen an unprecedented six days where temperatures exceeded 35°C, with this extreme heat recorded across three consecutive months—May, June, and July—for the first time.

Shifting Patterns of Heatwaves

The Met Office’s recent findings reveal a concerning trend: heatwaves in the UK are becoming more frequent, prolonged, and intense. Their latest State of the UK Climate report indicates that the number of days exceeding 30°C has quadrupled in regions such as Greater London. Alarmingly, these heatwaves are now increasingly occurring outside the traditional summer months. For instance, a heatwave last September brought seven consecutive days of temperatures over 30°C.

The first significant heat event of 2023 occurred in late May, shattering records for both daytime and overnight temperatures, including the UK’s first tropical night, where the minimum temperature was recorded at 21.4°C.

What Lies Ahead

Forecasts suggest a possible shift in weather patterns this weekend, with winds turning more northerly and bringing a slight decrease in temperatures for some regions. Scotland, Northern Ireland, and parts of north-east England may experience increased cloud cover and cooler temperatures in the low 20s. Meanwhile, much of England and Wales will likely remain warm, with temperatures ranging from 24°C to 27°C, and even reaching 28°C or 29°C in certain southern spots.

The extended outlook for July indicates that high-pressure systems may continue to dominate, maintaining above-average temperatures but not reaching the extremes of recent days. There is a possibility of sporadic showers towards the end of the month, particularly in northern areas. As we move into August, models suggest a return to more variable weather patterns, although warmer-than-average conditions are expected to persist.
