A sudden and violent storm has wreaked havoc across northern India, leaving at least 96 fatalities in its wake. The unseasonal hailstorm, which struck on Wednesday, was particularly devastating in Uttar Pradesh, a state already vulnerable to extreme weather phenomena. The storm’s violent winds, heavy rain, and hail not only caused loss of life but also extensive damage to infrastructure, complicating rescue efforts and raising concerns about climate patterns in the region.

Storm’s Path of Destruction

The storm, characterised by severe lightning and torrential rain, swept through five districts in Uttar Pradesh, uprooting trees and downing billboards that crashed onto vehicles. This natural disaster disrupted mobile communications, hindering emergency responders and making it challenging for officials to assess the full extent of the destruction.

Initial reports indicated that 89 individuals were killed due to storm-related incidents, but this figure was later revised to 96. Over 50 more people sustained injuries, with many casualties resulting from falling trees and the collapse of structures. According to local officials, the impact was particularly severe in rural areas, where homes and agriculture suffered significant damage.

Eyewitness Accounts

Residents across the affected districts described scenes of chaos as the storm descended rapidly. Ram Kishore, a resident of Prayagraj district, recalled, “The storm came suddenly, and the sky turned completely dark within minutes. Tin roofs were flying, and people ran indoors. We could hear trees falling throughout the evening.”

Bhadohi district was among the hardest hit, with at least 16 fatalities reported. Local police confirmed that six additional people were injured, two of whom sustained serious injuries. Savitri Devi, a villager from the area, recounted her family’s narrow escape as winds dismantled their mud house. “We rushed outside when the walls started shaking because of the wind. Our roof collapsed moments later,” she said.

In Fatehpur, nine individuals lost their lives, with additional injuries reported. The district’s additional magistrate, Avinash Tripathi, detailed that the casualties included eight people killed in Khaga tehsil and one woman who died when a wall collapsed in Sadar tehsil.

Tragically, the storm’s toll included young victims, such as 10-year-old Mausami and 9-year-old Rajni, who perished when the mud wall of their shelter fell. Their deaths highlight the storm’s indiscriminate nature and the vulnerability of those living in precarious housing.

Government Response

In the wake of the devastation, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered emergency teams to the affected regions for immediate relief efforts. He underscored the necessity for timely assistance, warning that negligence in responding to the crisis would not be tolerated. The Chief Minister also assured that compensation would be provided for losses incurred and mandated that assessments of damage be conducted by revenue, agriculture departments, and insurance firms.

Uttar Pradesh, with a staggering population of 240 million, is accustomed to severe weather, yet the occurrence of such intense hailstorms in mid-May is highly unusual. The state is typically engulfed in peak summer conditions during this period, with temperatures soaring above 40°C as it awaits the arrival of the monsoon rains. This year’s severe heatwave has already placed immense strain on the region.
