A devastating storm swept through the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, tragically resulting in the deaths of at least 111 individuals. The unusual mid-May weather event brought heavy rain, hail, and lightning, wreaking havoc across five districts and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. As local authorities scramble to assess the damage and provide aid, the region grapples with the aftermath of this unexpected calamity.

A Sudden Catastrophe

The storm that struck Uttar Pradesh was both violent and unanticipated, catching many residents off guard. Initial reports indicated that 89 people had perished due to storm-related incidents; however, this figure was later revised upwards to 111 as rescue operations revealed the full extent of the devastation. Officials cited falling trees and collapsing structures as primary causes of the fatalities, with over 50 people reported injured.

Narendra N Srivastava, a senior official in the state, confirmed the deployment of emergency teams to the most affected areas. The storm not only damaged homes and crops but also severely impacted power infrastructure, particularly in rural regions where the need for immediate assistance is dire. The intense weather disrupted mobile communications, complicating rescue efforts and hindering officials’ ability to evaluate the full extent of the destruction.

Global Condolences and Local Panic

The scale of the tragedy prompted expressions of sympathy from global leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, who extended his condolences to Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The United Arab Emirates and Singapore also voiced their support for the victims and their families, wishing a swift recovery for those injured.

Witnesses recounted scenes of panic as the storm descended. “The sky turned completely dark within minutes,” shared local resident Ram Kishore. “Tin roofs were flying, and we could hear trees crashing down throughout the evening.” In Prayagraj district, strong winds wreaked havoc, leaving families scrambling for safety as their homes succumbed to the storm’s fury.

The Hardest-Hit Areas

Bhadohi district bore the brunt of the storm’s wrath, with at least 16 fatalities reported. Local police provided details of separate incidents in which individuals lost their lives due to falling trees and structural collapses. Savitri Devi, a resident of the area, described a harrowing escape from her home as strong winds threatened to demolish it.

The destruction was similarly severe in Fatehpur, where nine individuals lost their lives, including five women. Additional
