Nearly 47 years after the brutal murder of Cardiff taxi driver John “Jack” Armstrong, police in Wales are once again appealing to the public for information that could finally bring his killer to justice.

Armstrong, a 58-year-old father, was last heard from on the evening of 5 October 1979 when he radioed in to confirm he had picked up a passenger from a pub in the Fairwater area of the city. Just hours later, his blood-stained taxi was discovered abandoned on Treoes Lane near Bridgend’s Waterton industrial estate. Three days after that, Armstrong’s body was found 11 miles away on Cowbridge Common.

Hundreds of witness statements were taken by detectives at the time, but Armstrong’s killer was never identified. Now, in 2023, police are reviewing the cold case, re-examining evidence and speaking to potential witnesses in the hope of finding a breakthrough.

“Despite the passage of time since Mr Armstrong’s death, we remain as committed as ever to bringing justice for Jack and his family,” said Detective Chief Inspector Matt Davies. “If the killer is still alive, they have been living with the knowledge of what they did for almost 47 years. I’d appeal to anyone who believes they know the identity of the killer to do the right thing and come forward.”

This is not the first time police have revisited the case in recent years. In 2020, they expressed hope that advances in forensic science and technology might provide a new line of inquiry, with Detective Chief Inspector Patrick Catto stating at the time that “it’s likely someone knows who was responsible” and that “people’s loyalties change.”

Tragically, Armstrong’s daughter Jean passed away without ever seeing justice for her father’s murder. “Keeping such a secret will have been a heavy burden – it’s time to do the right thing,” Catto had said in 2020, a sentiment echoed by his colleague DCI Davies today.

With the hope that someone, somewhere, may finally come forward with the information needed to crack this long-standing cold case, the search for Jack Armstrong’s killer continues.
