Advocates for women’s safety in Quebec are raising alarms as the province grapples with a disturbing rise in intimate partner violence. In just the last four months, it is suspected that nine women have lost their lives due to such violence. This alarming trend has spurred calls for immediate legislative reforms and enhanced support systems for victims.

Calls for Legislative Change

Ruba Ghazal, co-spokesperson for Québec Solidaire, has vocalised the need for urgent intervention by Premier Christine Fréchette. “I ask Mme. Fréchette to act,” Ghazal stated, urging the government to listen to all individuals concerned about preventing further feminicides in the province. In a poignant open letter co-signed by over 600 advocates, they demand the implementation of a new law that would allow women to ascertain if their partners have a history of violence.

This initiative is seen as crucial not only for the safety of women but also as a step towards transparency in intimate relationships. The letter further calls for the establishment of a dedicated ministry for women’s issues and increased funding for shelters and frontline organisations that support victims of domestic violence.

Symbolism Versus Action

Ghazal remarked on the significance of having a female premier in Quebec, noting that while it is a powerful symbol, it is not sufficient in itself. “But symbols can’t save lives. We need to do more than symbols,” she emphasised. The sentiment reflects a growing frustration among advocates who see the urgent need for tangible actions rather than mere rhetoric.

Louise Riendeau, from the Regroupement des maisons pour femmes victimes de violence conjugale, highlighted the inadequacies of current support structures. “We need to make a new step — to have new shelters and to ensure that existing shelters are fully staffed to assist women,” she asserted. The call for more resources is echoed by many who believe that the existing infrastructure is insufficient to handle the growing crisis.

Immediate Action Required

The signatories of the open letter are pressing for the newly-elected premier to reconvene the legislature, which is currently prorogued until May 5, to address these pressing issues. “Action can’t wait,” they insist. Manon Massé, an MNA from Québec Solidaire, reinforced this urgency, stating, “We have the money — Mme Fréchette has the money. She says she wants to do something, so I ask her to do it for real.”

Global News has reached out to Premier Fréchette for her response to these demands but has yet to receive a comment.

Why it Matters

The escalating violence against women in Quebec is a critical issue that transcends mere statistics; it represents a societal failure to protect the most vulnerable. The calls for legislative reform and increased support services reflect a collective recognition that immediate, substantial action is necessary to safeguard women’s lives. As advocates and citizens alike rally for change, the pressure mounts on the government to transform promises into action, ensuring that every woman can live free from fear of violence in her own home.
