In a significant development in the fight against the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), researchers have initiated a groundbreaking clinical trial to test two promising treatments. This rapid response comes just six weeks after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak a public health emergency on 17 May. With mounting cases and fatalities, the trial aims to provide new hope for patients suffering from the Bundibugyo strain of the virus.
Swift Action in the Face of Crisis
As of 9 July, the DRC had reported 1,792 confirmed Ebola cases and 625 deaths attributed to this virulent strain. With no approved vaccine or treatment currently available, the health authorities are relying on traditional methods such as case identification, isolation, and contact tracing. However, these efforts are hindered by community mistrust and logistical challenges, including a shortage of essential medical supplies and the recent protests by frontline workers demanding fair compensation.
Neema Haba, a local mother and banana seller in Bunia, expressed the frustration felt by many in the community. “Financially, we are being driven to the brink by this outbreak,” she lamented. “We are struggling to provide for our children.”
Promising Treatments Under Investigation
The newly launched Partners treatment trial will assess the effectiveness of two drugs: remdesivir, an antiviral developed by Gilead Sciences, and MBP134, a monoclonal antibody created by Mapp Biopharmaceutical. Patients enrolled in the trial will receive either of the drugs, a combination of both, or standard supportive care.
Professor Laurens Liesenborghs, involved in the trial, emphasised the importance of these treatments. “These two drugs have shown effectiveness against the Bundibugyo virus in animal models,” he noted. “Now we need to ascertain their efficacy in humans.” The trial aims to recruit between 700 and 1,000 patients, with promising early results potentially leading to a substantial reduction in mortality rates.
Community Challenges and Healthcare Strains
Despite the urgency of the situation, health workers continue to face dire conditions. Reports indicate a lack of personal protective equipment and essential resources needed to safely handle Ebola victims. Ovide Maliabo, a driver for a burial team, highlighted the dangers associated with their work, stating, “At one point, we narrowly escaped being lynched.” This atmosphere of fear is exacerbated by the community’s precarious trust in health authorities, making it increasingly difficult for frontline workers to perform their duties effectively.
Moreover, the temporary closure of Bunia’s airport has further complicated response efforts, restricting the movement of personnel and supplies. The DRC government claims that funds have been allocated to aid these workers, yet many remain sceptical, citing a lack of tangible support.
A Collaborative Effort for Global Health
The Partners trial is backed by a coalition of organisations, including the WHO and the Wellcome Trust, showcasing an international commitment to tackling this health crisis. The trial’s design allows for the addition of other treatments as they become available, ensuring that researchers can adapt to the evolving situation.
Professor Amanda Rojek from the University of Oxford praised the rapid initiation of the trial, contrasting it with the lengthy delays experienced during the West African Ebola outbreak from 2014 to 2016. “We are very proud of the team led by INRB [the DRC’s National Biomedical Research Institute] that we’ve managed to achieve this in approximately six weeks,” she stated.
