According to researchers, the enrolment of patients began swiftly in Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, where the outbreak is most severe. “It’s remarkable that we’ve managed to start so quickly,” remarked Prof. Amanda Rojek from the University of Oxford, who is leading the trial.
Despite the urgency, local residents express frustration over the slow pace of governmental response. Neema Haba, a mother of three, voiced her concerns: “Financially, we are being driven to the brink by this outbreak. We are struggling to provide for our children.” The mounting economic toll of the outbreak, combined with a lack of effective treatment options, has intensified the community’s distress.
Challenges on the Ground
Health workers are facing significant challenges as they attempt to manage the outbreak. Efforts to trace contacts and isolate infected individuals have been hampered by community mistrust and a highly mobile population. While approximately 75% of known contacts are being traced, the effectiveness of these initiatives is limited by local skepticism towards health authorities.
Furthermore, frontline workers have protested due to inadequate compensation, claiming that they are risking their lives without proper financial support. Promising Drug Candidates
The clinical trial, dubbed the Partners treatment trial, will assess two drugs—remdesivir, an antiviral developed by Gilead Sciences, and MBP134, a monoclonal antibody from Mapp Biopharmaceutical. These medications will be administered intravenously, with MBP134 given as a single infusion and remdesivir over a ten-day period.
Both drugs have shown promise in animal models against the Bundibugyo virus. Prof. Laurens Liesenborghs, involved in the trial, stated, “These two drugs actually have been proven to work against the Bundibugyo virus in animal models. We need to test it in humans.” The goal is to determine if these treatments can significantly reduce mortality rates associated with this strain, which currently stands at approximately one in three infected individuals.
Ensuring Inclusive Access
One of the trial’s notable aspects is its commitment to inclusivity, allowing patients of all ages—including pregnant and breastfeeding women—to participate. “Here the benefit is potentially very high because you offer a potentially life-saving treatment to someone who has a very high chance of dying,” noted Prof. Liesenborghs. This approach aligns with ethical considerations in medical research, particularly in high-risk populations.
The WHO has facilitated the provision of sufficient supplies for up to 1,200 patients, thanks to donations from Gilead and the US government. The trial is designed to be flexible, permitting the addition of further treatments as they become available, thus enhancing the chances of finding effective therapies.
