In a concerning development, an American doctor has contracted Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and has been airlifted to Germany for urgent medical care. Dr Peter Stafford’s family, including his wife and four children, is now under observation for potential symptoms of the virus as the World Health Organization (WHO) raises alarms about the rapid and extensive nature of the outbreak.
Rising Concerns Over Ebola Outbreak
The current outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola has led to reports of at least 134 suspected fatalities and more than 600 cases, igniting fears among health officials. The situation has escalated to such an extent that it has been declared a public health emergency, prompting calls for immediate international intervention. The DRC’s Ituri province, where the outbreak was first identified, has seen the virus extend its reach into urban centres, further complicating containment efforts.
Dr Stafford, who serves as a surgeon and is affiliated with the Christian missionary organisation Serge, reportedly performed surgery on a patient who later died. Initially thought to have a gallbladder infection, the patient’s condition deteriorated rapidly after the surgery, leading to a death that went untested for Ebola. Unfortunately, Stafford soon displayed symptoms himself, testing positive for the virus on Sunday, as confirmed by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Dr Stafford’s wife, Rebekah, who is also a medical professional, along with their four children, are currently being closely monitored for any signs of the disease. During his departure for treatment, witnesses described Stafford as appearing extremely fatigued and unsteady, requiring assistance from medical personnel clad in full protective equipment.
