European airlines are being encouraged to consider the use of US-grade jet fuel as a potential remedy for looming shortages exacerbated by the ongoing conflict between the US and Israel and its implications for Iran. This recommendation comes from the European Union alongside key international airline bodies, including the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Addressing Supply Chain Disruptions
The IATA has indicated that a broader acceptance of US-grade jet fuel could alleviate potential supply issues that may arise as the geopolitical crisis unfolds. With the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) providing safety guidelines for the introduction of US fuel into European markets, the groundwork for this transition is being laid. Importantly, the EU has stated that there are no regulatory barriers preventing European carriers from utilising US-grade fuel, provided it is incorporated safely.
The escalation of the conflict has led to a significant increase in jet fuel prices for European airlines, which have surged by 50% since the onset of hostilities. IATA’s director of flight and technical operations, Stuart Fox, expressed concerns that continued instability in the Middle East could lead to fuel shortages across various regions.
Understanding Jet A-1 and Jet A Fuels
In the aviation sector, two primary types of fuel are employed: Jet A-1, the global standard predominantly used in international flights, and Jet A, which is mainly utilised in North America. Both fuels are types of kerosene and possess similar properties; however, Jet A-1 features a lower freezing point, making it more suitable for long-haul routes and polar aviation.
The ongoing crisis has severely restricted the availability of Jet A-1 from Gulf suppliers, which poses a significant challenge for Europe, a region that heavily depends on imports from this area. While there has been an increase in shipments of Jet A from the United States, many US refineries are not equipped to produce Jet A-1, thus limiting the volume that can be shipped to Europe.
Fox noted that employing Jet A could provide a pragmatic solution to mitigate the strain on existing supply chains. He highlighted that airlines in North America routinely use Jet A and effectively serve colder regions, such as Alaska, by employing fuel additives and meticulous flight planning to maintain safety standards.
EASA’s Safety Guidance
In response to these developments, the EASA has circulated a safety information bulletin aimed at fuel suppliers, as well as aircraft and airport operators. The agency reassured that the introduction of Jet A in Europe, if managed appropriately, would not pose safety risks. However, it did caution that improper handling could lead to operational challenges, including aircraft operating beyond their safe limits.
The EASA also identified the potential for complications arising from inconsistent fuel grade availability at various airports, which could increase the chances of mixing fuel grades and lead to operational mismatches.
On the regulatory front, the EU has confirmed that there are no obligations dictating the exclusive use of either fuel type. It reiterated that the import and use of Jet A fuel in Europe are permissible, provided that all safety protocols are effectively communicated throughout the fuel supply chain.
Current Situation for Airlines
In a recent statement, International Airlines Group (IAG), the parent company of British Airways, indicated that it does not currently face issues with fuel availability in its primary markets. However, it acknowledged that should the conflict persist and disrupt crude oil and jet fuel flows from the Middle East, global supplies could become constrained.
