As the FIFA World Cup approaches, Metro Vancouver’s airports are gearing up for the imminent arrival of global dignitaries, celebrities, and affluent travellers arriving in private jets. With the tournament set to kick off next month, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) anticipates a notable increase in private aircraft traffic, although it’s unlikely to rival the record numbers seen during events like Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.
Anticipated Surge in Private Jet Arrivals
Andy Margolis, Chief Operations Officer at Vancouver International Airport, has indicated that while the daily influx of private planes typically ranges from 15 to 25, the World Cup will likely lead to a modest spike. However, he tempered expectations by referencing the extraordinary day when 181 private jets landed in Vancouver for Swift’s concert last December.
“The World Cup spans several weeks, and I don’t expect the numbers surrounding the match days to approach what we saw for Taylor Swift. Our facilities are well-prepared for the anticipated traffic,” Margolis stated.
Vancouver will host seven matches throughout June and July, drawing interest from a range of international visitors. Private jets arriving at YVR must reserve their landing slots and coordinate with one of three specialised companies operating at the airport, which offer premium amenities such as luxury hangars and pilot lounges.
Additional Preparations at Boundary Bay Airport
In addition to YVR, Boundary Bay Airport in Delta, British Columbia, is also preparing for an uptick in private jet traffic, albeit on a first-come, first-served basis for landings. Julia Rieberger, the administrative manager for Alpha Aviation, noted they are developing contingency plans to accommodate additional aircraft parking and are exploring options for helicopter transfers into Vancouver to ease travel to BC Place stadium.
“We’ve seen a significant number of inquiries from charter companies and private operators regarding our pricing, fuel supplies, and customs clearance. While we anticipate interest, actual bookings will likely materialise only 24 to 48 hours before arrival,” Rieberger explained. Historically, Boundary Bay sees only a handful of private jets each week, and like Margolis, she does not foresee a surge comparable to that of Swift’s concert.
Air Traffic Management in Full Swing
Nav Canada, the nation’s air traffic service provider, has been proactively preparing for the expected influx of flights during this summer’s World Cup. Their planning has been underway for over a year, focusing on accommodating increased demands during peak times and major international events hosted in Canada.
“Nav Canada has a strong record of ensuring safe and efficient services during significant events, including the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and the 2018 G7 Summit. Our preparations for the World Cup incorporate lessons learned from these past experiences, ensuring seamless coordination with airlines, airport authorities, and regional airports for overflow traffic,” a spokesperson stated.
Margolis highlighted that planning for the World Cup has been ongoing since 2022, as the airport team has strategised to ensure that operations run smoothly throughout the tournament.
Commercial Flights and Passenger Expectations
For those travelling via commercial airlines, Margolis confirmed that the overall number of flights into Vancouver will remain unchanged. However, he expects planes to operate at full capacity, with an increase in passenger numbers projected.
“During the summer months, we typically handle around 80,000 passengers daily. We anticipate a five to ten per cent increase in passenger volumes during the tournament, which while significant, is manageable within our system. The key difference will be that these travellers will be coming for FIFA-related events rather than for other purposes,” he added.
Why it Matters
The FIFA World Cup is a monumental event not only for the sport but also for the host cities, bringing with it an influx of visitors and significant economic impact. Vancouver’s meticulous planning reflects its readiness to welcome the world, showcasing its capabilities to manage high-profile events. The focus on both private and commercial travel ensures that the city is poised to deliver an unforgettable experience for all attendees, reinforcing Canada’s stature on the global sports stage.
