As the countdown to the FIFA World Cup begins, airports in Metro Vancouver are gearing up for an influx of elite travellers, including world leaders and celebrities arriving via private jets. With the tournament set to commence next month, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is preparing for a notable increase in air traffic, although officials do not expect the numbers to rival the record-breaking arrivals seen during major events like Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.
Anticipated Increase in Private Jet Traffic
Andy Margolis, the Chief Operations Officer of YVR, has indicated that while the daily average of 15 to 25 private jets is expected to rise, it will not come close to the staggering 181 private planes that landed during Swift’s concert in December 2024. Margolis stated, “The World Cup spans several weeks, and I don’t anticipate the numbers surrounding the matches will approach the levels we saw with Taylor Swift. We are confident in our capacity to manage the expected traffic.”
Vancouver is set to host seven matches from June to July, and all private jets arriving at YVR must schedule their landing times in advance through three specialist companies that provide services including luxury hangars and pilot lounges. However, Margolis warned that precise figures regarding private jet arrivals remain elusive, as most operators typically finalise their plans only shortly before departure.
Boundary Bay Airport Prepares for Demand
In addition to YVR, Boundary Bay Airport in Delta, British Columbia, is also readying itself for an uptick in private jet traffic. Unlike YVR, Boundary Bay operates on a first-come, first-served basis for landings. Julia Rieberger, administrative manager for Alpha Aviation, the airport’s operator, revealed that contingency plans are being developed to accommodate the surge in arrivals. This includes assessing the feasibility of helicopter transfers to Vancouver, allowing visitors to bypass the 30-kilometre drive to the BC Place Stadium.
“We’ve received numerous inquiries from charter companies and private operators about our pricing, fuel supply, and customs clearance,” Rieberger noted. “While we are seeing a lot of interest, actual bookings will likely not materialise until 24 to 48 hours before arrival.”
Air Traffic Management and Safety Protocols
Nav Canada, responsible for the nation’s air traffic services, has been proactively preparing for the anticipated increase in air traffic this summer. Their planning has taken into account the lessons learned from past major international events, including the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010 and various G7 Summits. “Our focus is on delivering safe and efficient services during peak demand periods,” the organisation stated.
Margolis emphasised that YVR has been strategising for the World Cup since 2022, ensuring that all systems are in place to handle the expected influx of visitors. For those travelling on commercial flights, the airport expects to see a 5 to 10 per cent increase in passenger numbers. “We usually handle around 80,000 passengers daily in the summer,” he explained. “This increase will primarily involve travellers coming for FIFA-related activities rather than general tourism.”
