As Vancouver prepares to host the FIFA World Cup next month, the city’s airports are gearing up for an influx of high-profile guests, including world leaders and celebrities arriving in private jets. Andy Margolis, Chief Operations Officer at Vancouver International Airport (YVR), anticipates an increase in private air traffic, although he emphasises it will not rival the record numbers seen during last year’s Eras Tour by Taylor Swift.
Anticipated Influx of Private Aircraft
Vancouver will be hosting seven matches throughout June and July, prompting expectations of heightened activity at YVR. Typically, the airport accommodates 15 to 25 private planes daily. However, Margolis underscores that the projected figures for the World Cup will not approach the staggering 181 private jets that descended upon Vancouver in a single day during Swift’s concert tour.
“The World Cup spans several weeks,” Margolis explained. “I do not foresee the numbers on the days surrounding the games reaching anywhere near the levels we experienced with Taylor Swift. We are fully equipped to manage the expected surge.”
Landing Procedures and Capacity Management
Private jets arriving at YVR are required to schedule their landing times in advance and coordinate with one of three specialised companies that provide services such as luxurious hangars and pilot lounges. Margolis noted that many operators delay their bookings until closer to their arrival date, making it challenging to predict the exact volume of private flights for the tournament.

In addition to YVR, Boundary Bay Airport in Delta, British Columbia, is also gearing up for increased private jet traffic. Unlike YVR, Boundary Bay operates on a first-come, first-served basis for landings. Julia Rieberger, Administrative Manager for Alpha Aviation, shared that they are developing contingency plans for additional aircraft parking and exploring helicopter transfer options to whisk visitors into Vancouver, alleviating the need for a 30-kilometre drive to BC Place Stadium.
“We have received numerous inquiries regarding our pricing, fuel supply, and customs clearance,” Rieberger stated. “While we anticipate a rise in interest, concrete bookings are likely to materialise only 24 to 48 hours before arrival.”
Planning for Major Events
Nav Canada, the entity responsible for the nation’s air traffic services, has been proactively preparing for the summer’s demand profile for over a year. The organisation has drawn on its extensive experience from managing air traffic during major international events, such as the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010 and the G7 Summit in Charlevoix in 2018.
“Nav Canada has established a reputation for delivering safe and efficient services during significant events,” the organisation said in a statement. “Our planning incorporates the lessons learned from previous large-scale gatherings, including coordinated efforts with airlines and airport authorities to handle overflow traffic efficiently.”
Margolis indicated that preparations for the World Cup have been in the works since 2022, ensuring that YVR is ready for the anticipated surge in air travel.
Commercial Flight Capacity Remains Steady
For those fans who may not have access to private jets, Margolis reassured that the number of commercial flights into Vancouver will remain unchanged. However, he expects these flights to be at full capacity, with the airport typically accommodating around 80,000 passengers daily in the summer months.

“We forecast a five to ten per cent increase in passenger numbers on any given day during the tournament,” he noted. “While this represents a manageable uptick, the nature of the travellers will shift to primarily those attending FIFA-related events.”
Why it Matters
The impending arrival of the FIFA World Cup not only highlights Vancouver’s capacity to host major international events but also showcases the city’s appeal to elite travellers. The hospitality and aviation sectors stand to benefit significantly from the influx of guests, which can enhance Vancouver’s global reputation as a premier destination. As the world’s eyes turn to the city, the effective management of air traffic around this prestigious tournament will be crucial in ensuring a smooth and successful event for both visitors and locals alike.
