As the FIFA World Cup approaches, airports throughout Metro Vancouver are gearing up for a significant influx of international dignitaries, celebrities, and wealthy visitors arriving in their private jets. With the tournament set to commence next month, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is expecting a notable increase from the usual daily count of 15 to 25 private flights. However, the anticipated surge is unlikely to rival the record-breaking influx seen during Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in December 2024.

Anticipated Traffic at Vancouver International Airport

Andy Margolis, Chief Operations Officer of YVR, shared insights into the expected aircraft traffic, indicating that while there will be a rise in private jet arrivals, it will not reach the extraordinary levels of 181 private planes that landed in a single day for the pop star’s concert. “The World Cup spans several weeks, so I don’t foresee numbers approaching the Taylor Swift event. It remains within our manageable capacity,” Margolis stated.

Vancouver is set to host seven matches over June and July, and private jets must coordinate their landing schedules with one of three specialised companies based at YVR, which offer amenities such as luxury hangars and pilot lounges. Although the airport has made preparations, the exact number of private flights remains uncertain, as many do not secure landing slots until closer to their arrival date.

Boundary Bay Airport Prepares for Increased Demand

In addition to YVR, Boundary Bay Airport in Delta, B.C., is also gearing up for a rise in private jet traffic. Unlike YVR, Boundary Bay operates on a first-come, first-served basis for landings. Julia Rieberger, the administrative manager for Alpha Aviation, highlighted that they are developing contingency plans for parking additional planes and are considering helicopter transfers to facilitate easier access into downtown Vancouver, particularly for those looking to skip the 30-kilometre drive to BC Place stadium.

Boundary Bay Airport Prepares for Increased Demand

“We’ve received numerous inquiries from charter companies and private operators about our pricing, fuel supplies, customs clearance, and overall viability as an entry point into Vancouver,” Rieberger explained. “However, solid bookings are generally not expected until 24 to 48 hours prior to arrival.”

Strategic Planning by Nav Canada

Nav Canada, the country’s air traffic management service, has been meticulously preparing for the anticipated demand this summer for over a year. Their planning encompasses periods of heightened activity and major international events, drawing from experiences gained during previous significant occasions such as the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and the G7 Summit in Charlevoix.

“Our proven track record in managing air traffic during major events informs our planning for this summer,” Nav Canada stated. “Coordination with airlines, airport authorities, and regional airports is critical, particularly for overflow and general aviation traffic.”

Margolis noted that the airport team has been preparing for the FIFA World Cup since 2022, ensuring that all necessary measures are in place for a smooth operation.

Commercial Flight Capacity Remains Stable

For soccer fans who aren’t travelling by private jet, Margolis reassured that while commercial flight numbers will remain steady, the planes are expected to be at full capacity. During the summer months, YVR typically handles around 80,000 passengers daily. The airport forecasts a modest increase of 5 to 10 per cent in passenger numbers on any given day, indicating that the majority of travellers will be heading to Vancouver specifically for FIFA-related events.

Why it Matters

The FIFA World Cup is not merely a sporting event; it represents a global spectacle that can significantly boost local economies and enhance Vancouver’s international profile. With preparations underway to accommodate a diverse array of guests, from world leaders to avid football fans, the event promises to showcase Vancouver as a premier destination. The careful planning and robust infrastructure in place will ensure that both private and commercial aviation can handle the anticipated surge, creating a seamless travel experience during this exciting time.
