As the FIFA World Cup approaches, airports in Metro Vancouver are bracing for a surge in private jet arrivals from world leaders, celebrities, and affluent visitors. With the tournament set to commence next month, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is preparing for an increase in air traffic, though officials do not anticipate the record numbers seen during high-profile events like Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.
Anticipated Surge in Private Jet Arrivals
Andy Margolis, the Chief Operations Officer at Vancouver International Airport, predicts a noticeable rise in the number of private aircraft landing at YVR, which typically sees between 15 and 25 private planes daily. However, he emphasises that the expected influx will not approach the extraordinary 181 private jets that swarmed the airport in a single day during Swift’s concert in December 2024.
Margolis stated, “The World Cup spans several weeks. I don’t foresee the numbers around the match days reaching anywhere near the Taylor Swift levels. We are well-equipped to manage this increase.”
Vancouver will host seven matches throughout June and July, making it a key destination during the tournament.
Booking and Airport Preparations
Private jets planning to land at YVR must pre-arrange their landing times and coordinate with one of three specialised companies that offer luxury services, including high-end hangars and exclusive pilot lounges. Margolis acknowledged the challenge of predicting the exact number of private flights, as many operators tend to secure their slots closer to their arrival dates.
In addition to YVR, Boundary Bay Airport in Delta, B.C., which operates on a first-come, first-served basis, is also preparing for an uptick in private jet traffic. Julia Rieberger, administrative manager for Alpha Aviation, noted that they are developing contingency plans for extra parking spaces and exploring helicopter transfers into Vancouver to ease access to BC Place stadium, located roughly 30 kilometres away.
“We’ve received numerous inquiries from charter companies and private operators about our pricing, fuel supplies, and customs clearance,” Rieberger explained. “While we are seeing interest, solid bookings won’t likely materialise until 24 to 48 hours before arrival.”
Strategic Coordination for Increased Traffic
Nav Canada, responsible for the country’s air traffic services, has been preparing for the anticipated demand associated with this summer’s major event for over a year. The organisation has a solid history of efficiently managing air traffic during significant international occasions, including the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and the G7 Summits.
“Nav Canada has a proven track record of delivering safe and efficient services during major international events,” a representative stated. “Our planning incorporates lessons learned from past experiences and involves coordination with airlines, airport authorities, and regional airports to manage overflow traffic.”
Margolis highlighted that YVR has been strategising for the FIFA World Cup since 2022, ensuring that they are fully prepared for the influx of visitors.
Impact on Commercial Flights
For soccer fans who will be travelling on commercial flights rather than private jets, Margolis indicated that the number of commercial services to Vancouver will remain unchanged. However, he expects that flights will be at full capacity during the tournament, with projections estimating a 5 to 10 per cent increase in passenger numbers on any given day.
“During the summer, we typically handle around 80,000 passengers daily,” said Margolis. “While the increase in numbers is manageable, we anticipate that travellers will primarily be visiting for FIFA-related events.”
