With the FIFA World Cup just around the corner, airports in Metro Vancouver are bracing for an influx of high-profile arrivals, including world leaders and celebrities flying in via private jets. Scheduled to begin next month, the tournament will see Vancouver hosting seven matches, prompting significant preparations from local airports to accommodate the anticipated surge in air traffic.
Anticipated Spike in Private Jet Arrivals
Andy Margolis, the Chief Operations Officer at Vancouver International Airport (YVR), is preparing for an increase in private jet activity. Typically, YVR accommodates between 15 and 25 private planes daily, but the World Cup is expected to bring a noticeable rise in this figure. However, Margolis is quick to temper expectations, noting that the numbers are unlikely to reach the extraordinary peak witnessed during Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in December 2024, when 181 private jets landed in a single day.
“This tournament spans several weeks, and I do not foresee the numbers on the days surrounding the matches reaching anywhere near Taylor Swift’s levels,” he remarked. “We are well-equipped to manage the expected influx.”
Preparations at Boundary Bay Airport
Meanwhile, Boundary Bay Airport in Delta, British Columbia, is also gearing up for an uptick in private jet traffic. Unlike YVR, which requires pre-booking for landing slots, Boundary Bay operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Julia Rieberger, the airport’s administrative manager at Alpha Aviation, revealed that the airport is actively developing contingency plans to create additional parking spaces for incoming aircraft. Furthermore, they are exploring the option of helicopter transfers to facilitate quick access to Vancouver for those wishing to avoid the lengthy drive to BC Place stadium.
“We’ve received numerous inquiries from charter companies and private operators about our pricing, fuel supplies, and customs clearance,” Rieberger explained. “While we’ve had a lot of interest, concrete bookings are likely to materialise only 24 to 48 hours before arrival.”
Navigating Increased Air Traffic
Nav Canada, responsible for the country’s air traffic management, has been preparing for this summer’s heightened demand for well over a year. The organisation has drawn on its extensive experience from previous major events, such as the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and the G7 Summits, to ensure a seamless experience during the World Cup.
“Nav Canada has a proven track record of providing safe and efficient services during significant international gatherings,” the organisation stated. “Our strategy for this summer includes close coordination with airlines, airport authorities, and nearby airports to manage overflow traffic effectively.”
Margolis highlighted that YVR has been planning for the World Cup since 2022, ensuring that procedures are in place to handle the expected increase in traffic.
Commercial Flights Remain Steady
For soccer fans opting for commercial flights, Margolis confirmed that the overall number of commercial flights landing in Vancouver will remain unchanged. However, he anticipates that planes will be operating at full capacity. During the summer months, YVR typically sees around 80,000 passengers daily, and forecasts indicate a potential rise of 5 to 10 per cent in passenger numbers during the World Cup period.
“This increase, while notable, is manageable for our system,” Margolis stated. “The difference will be that these travellers will primarily be visiting for FIFA-related events rather than other purposes.”
