As the excitement builds for the FIFA World Cup, set to kick off next month, airports in Metro Vancouver are bracing for an influx of dignitaries, celebrities, and affluent visitors arriving in private jets. Vancouver International Airport (YVR) anticipates an increase in private aircraft landings, but officials assert that the surge is manageable compared to previous high-profile events.
Anticipating a Busy Tournament Season
Andy Margolis, chief operations officer at YVR, predicts an uptick in private jet arrivals from the usual 15 to 25 daily flights. However, he emphasises that the volume is unlikely to approach the staggering 181 private planes that descended upon Vancouver in a single day during Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in December 2024.
“The World Cup spans several weeks, so I don’t expect the numbers around the match days to rival that of Taylor Swift,” Margolis stated. “This influx remains well within our operational capacity.”
Vancouver is set to host seven matches over the course of June and July, making it a prime destination for international visitors.
Coordination and Logistics for Private Arrivals
To accommodate the expected increase in private flights, YVR requires all aircraft to pre-book their landing slots. This process involves working with one of three specialised companies based at the airport, which offer amenities such as luxury hangars and exclusive pilot lounges. Margolis noted that accurately predicting the number of private jets arriving for the World Cup is challenging, as many do not secure landing times until just days prior to their arrival.
Meanwhile, Boundary Bay Airport in Delta, B.C., known for its first-come first-serve landing policy, is also preparing for a rise in private jet traffic during the tournament. Julia Rieberger, administrative manager at Alpha Aviation, shared that they are developing contingency plans to enhance parking capabilities and are exploring helicopter transfers for guests wishing to bypass the lengthy drive to BC Place Stadium.
“We’ve had numerous inquiries from charter companies and private operators about our pricing, fuel supply, and customs clearance,” Rieberger explained. “However, solid bookings are likely to materialise only 24 to 48 hours before arrival.”
Boundary Bay typically accommodates a limited number of private flights each week, and like Margolis, Rieberger does not foresee an influx on the scale of the recent Taylor Swift concert.
Comprehensive Planning for Increased Air Traffic
Nav Canada, the nation’s air traffic service provider, has been proactively preparing for the expected demand this summer. With a keen focus on major international events, they have drawn on their experiences from past occasions such as the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and the G7 Summits.
“Nav Canada has a proven record of ensuring safe and efficient air traffic services during significant events,” the organisation stated. “Our preparations for this summer are built on the protocols and lessons learned from those past experiences, including close coordination with airlines and airport authorities.”
Margolis affirmed that the airport has been strategising for the FIFA World Cup since 2022, ensuring that everything is in place for a smooth operation.
Commercial Flights Remain Steady
For soccer fans who won’t be arriving in private jets, Margolis reassured that the number of commercial flights landing at YVR will remain stable, although they are expected to be operating at full capacity. The airport usually sees an average of 80,000 passengers daily during the summer months.
“Our forecasts suggest a 5 to 10 per cent increase in passenger numbers on any given day. This isn’t a significant surge in terms of overall capacity; it’s more about the purpose of the travel, as these passengers will be arriving for FIFA-related events,” he added.
