As the FIFA World Cup approaches, airports in Metro Vancouver are bracing for an influx of international celebrities, dignitaries, and the wealthy arriving in their private jets. The tournament, set to commence next month, has prompted Vancouver International Airport (YVR) to anticipate a notable rise in air traffic, although officials do not expect the numbers to reach the extraordinary levels seen during Taylor Swift’s recent concert series in the city.
Anticipated Increase in Private Jet Arrivals
Andy Margolis, YVR’s Chief Operations Officer, has indicated that the airport typically sees between 15 to 25 private aircraft daily. However, he does not foresee the upcoming World Cup generating a similar volume to the record-breaking 181 private jets that landed in a single day during Swift’s Eras Tour in December 2024. “The World Cup spans several weeks, and I don’t expect the figures around the match days to come close to those seen during Taylor Swift’s concert. Our capacity can handle the expected increase,” he stated.
Vancouver will host seven matches in the upcoming tournament, ensuring a steady stream of visitors. For private jets landing at YVR, prior booking of landing slots is required, and they must coordinate with one of three specialised ground services that offer opulent amenities such as luxury hangars and pilot lounges.
Boundary Bay Airport Prepares for a Busy Season
In addition to YVR, Boundary Bay Airport in Delta, British Columbia, is also gearing up for an increased number of private flights. Unlike YVR, this airport operates on a first-come, first-served basis for landings, making it an appealing option for those arriving for the World Cup.
Julia Rieberger, the administrative manager for Alpha Aviation, which operates Boundary Bay, noted that they are implementing contingency plans to accommodate the anticipated demand. “We have received numerous inquiries from charter companies and private operators concerning our services, fuel supply, and customs clearance to assess whether we can serve as a viable point of entry to Vancouver,” she explained.
However, like Margolis, Rieberger does not predict a surge comparable to that seen during the Taylor Swift event. Boundary Bay typically sees only a few private planes per week, with solid bookings likely materialising just 24 to 48 hours before arrival.
Air Traffic Management in High Demand
Nav Canada, the authority responsible for the country’s air traffic services, has been proactively preparing for the World Cup’s influx. The agency has been strategising for heightened air traffic demands for over a year, drawing on experiences from previous major events, including the 2010 Winter Olympics and the annual Canadian Grand Prix.
“Nav Canada has successfully managed air traffic during significant international events before, and we are dedicated to maintaining safe and efficient operations during the World Cup,” the organisation stated. Their planning includes coordination with airlines, airport authorities, and nearby airports that may handle overflow traffic.
Commercial Flights Remain Steady
While private jet arrivals are expected to rise, Margolis assured that the volume of commercial flights at YVR will remain unchanged. However, he anticipates that these flights will be operating at full capacity due to the influx of soccer fans. During the summer months, YVR typically accommodates around 80,000 passengers daily, and projections indicate a potential increase of five to ten per cent during the World Cup period.
“The increase in passenger numbers is manageable for our system, and we expect that travellers will primarily be visiting for FIFA-related activities,” Margolis concluded.
