As the FIFA World Cup approaches, airports in Metro Vancouver are bracing for an influx of high-profile visitors, including world leaders, celebrities, and affluent sports enthusiasts arriving in private jets. Vancouver International Airport (YVR) anticipates a notable rise in traffic, although it is not expected to rival the record numbers seen during last year’s Taylor Swift concert in the city.

Anticipated Increase in Private Jet Arrivals

Andy Margolis, YVR’s Chief Operations Officer, has indicated that the airport usually accommodates between 15 to 25 private flights daily. However, with the World Cup set to kick off in June, he expects a temporary spike in arrivals. “While we’re preparing for a busier period, I do not foresee numbers approaching the 181 private jets that landed in a single day for the Eras Tour,” Margolis explained. The tournament will see Vancouver host seven matches over a few weeks, adding to the airport’s regular operations.

Private jets wishing to land at YVR must schedule their arrival times in advance, collaborating with one of three specialised service providers at the airport. These companies offer luxury amenities, including upscale hangars and pilot lounges, to cater to their elite clientele.

Contingency Plans in Place

The Boundary Bay Airport, located in Delta, British Columbia, is also preparing for an increase in private aviation traffic. Unlike YVR, this airport operates on a first-come, first-served basis, making it an appealing alternative for those arriving without a reserved landing spot. Julia Rieberger, the administrative manager at Alpha Aviation, reported a surge of inquiries from charter companies and private operators, all keen to ascertain the airport’s capabilities. “We are actively devising contingency plans for additional parking and exploring helicopter transfers into Vancouver to help guests avoid the lengthy drive to BC Place stadium,” she noted.

Despite the uptick in interest, Rieberger echoed Margolis’s sentiments, indicating that actual bookings may not materialise until shortly before the event. Boundary Bay typically sees only a small number of private flights each week, and while preparations are underway, officials are not anticipating a volume comparable to that witnessed during the Taylor Swift event.

Coordinated Efforts for Smooth Operations

Nav Canada, responsible for the nation’s air traffic management, has been strategising for the World Cup for over a year. The organisation has built upon its extensive experience from previous high-profile events, including the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and the G7 Summits, to ensure a safe and efficient experience for all air traffic. “Our planning process incorporates lessons from past experiences, involving close coordination with airlines, airport authorities, and regional airports to manage overflow traffic effectively,” a spokesperson stated.

Vancouver International Airport has been in planning mode since 2022, working diligently to accommodate the anticipated crowd while maintaining operational efficiency. Margolis reassured that the number of commercial flights would remain stable, but with an expected increase in passenger numbers. “We predict a rise of between 5% and 10% in daily passenger volume, which is manageable given that our average daily footfall in summer is around 80,000,” he added.

A City Ready for the Spotlight

As Vancouver prepares to host the World Cup, the city is not only looking at the logistical challenges of increased air traffic but also the broader implications of hosting such a significant international event.

Why it Matters

The FIFA World Cup is a prime opportunity for Vancouver to showcase itself on a global stage. The expected increase in visitors, along with the heightened media attention, can have lasting economic benefits for the city, potentially boosting tourism and local business. Efficient airport operations will play a crucial role in ensuring that both elite guests and soccer fans enjoy a seamless experience, reinforcing Vancouver’s reputation as a premier destination for international events.
