With just 35 days until the tournament kicks off, city officials held a press conference to outline the logistics for the event, which will run from June 11 to July 19, spanning 16 cities across North America, including Vancouver and Toronto.
Large-Scale Security Measures Announced
The first match in Vancouver is set for June 13, and the city anticipates welcoming approximately 350,000 visitors over the seven match days. Don Chapman, the deputy chief of the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) and co-chair of the integrated safety and security unit established for the tournament, detailed the unprecedented scale of police operations. Although exact staffing figures were not disclosed, Chapman confirmed that personnel will be drawn from multiple law enforcement agencies, including the VPD, the RCMP, Metro Vancouver Transit Police, and police services from Delta, Calgary, and Edmonton.
Vancouver’s security preparations are designed to align closely with those in Toronto, where the opening match will occur a day earlier on June 12. The police have also unveiled a multimillion-pound central command centre, complete with drones and a command vehicle to oversee operations. “Our department operations centre will be fully operational, as will the city’s operation centre,” Chapman noted, adding that drones would be deployed to monitor crowd movements when necessary.
Privacy Concerns Addressed
In light of the extensive security measures, the information and privacy commissioners of British Columbia and Ontario jointly urged local governments and law enforcement agencies to respect citizens’ privacy rights during the World Cup. Their statement emphasised the importance of ensuring that any surveillance practices are legal, necessary, and proportionate, with a commitment to transparency and time-limited operations for game-related monitoring.
Deputy Chief Chapman acknowledged the collaboration with B.C.’s privacy commissioner regarding the installation of additional CCTV cameras around BC Place, ensuring that privacy rights are upheld alongside public safety measures.
Transportation Enhancements for Fans
To accommodate the influx of visitors, roadways surrounding BC Place will be temporarily closed and designated for local traffic only. Taunya Geelhoed, chief operations officer for the host city committee, indicated that fans will be directed to enter through the Main Street-Science World SkyTrain Station. Notably, the science centre’s iconic geodesic dome will be transformed into a vibrant representation of the World Cup’s official match ball.
In addition, TransLink, the regional transportation authority, plans to increase bus services by around 600 trips per day, including a dedicated shuttle service linking SkyTrain lines to the fan festival at the PNE grounds, situated roughly six kilometres from the stadium.

The overall financial impact of hosting the World Cup on British Columbia taxpayers remains uncertain. The provincial government’s last update in June estimated costs between £532 million and £624 million, expected to be partially offset by revenues estimated between £448 million and £478 million. Recently, the federal government committed £145 million towards security for the World Cup, with £100 million earmarked for expenditures in British Columbia. Jessie Adcock, the lead for Vancouver’s host committee, stated that a budget update would be shared in the coming weeks.
