As the countdown begins for the FIFA World Cup, Metro Vancouver airports are bracing for an influx of world leaders, celebrities, and the ultra-wealthy arriving in private jets. The tournament, set to kick off next month, is expected to see a marked increase in air traffic, particularly at Vancouver International Airport (YVR), where officials are gearing up for the challenge.
Anticipated Increase in Private Jet Arrivals
Andy Margolis, the Chief Operations Officer of YVR, has indicated that the airport typically accommodates between 15 and 25 private aircraft each day. With the World Cup on the horizon, he projects a rise in these numbers, although he does not expect it to reach the astonishing 181 private jets that landed in one day during Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in December 2024.
Margolis explained, “The World Cup spans several weeks, so I’m not anticipating the numbers to rival those seen during the concert. Our capacity can handle this increase comfortably.”
Vancouver will host seven matches throughout June and July, and all private jets arriving must coordinate their landing schedules with one of three specialised companies based at YVR, which offer luxurious amenities such as exclusive hangars and pilot lounges.
Managing the Uncertainty of Bookings
While the excitement builds, the actual number of private planes expected for the tournament remains uncertain. Many operators typically reserve their slots closer to their intended arrival date, complicating predictions.

At Boundary Bay Airport, located in Delta, B.C., the approach to landings is different. This airport operates on a first-come, first-served basis, and it too is preparing for increased private jet activity linked to the World Cup. Julia Rieberger, the administrative manager for Alpha Aviation, noted that they are developing contingency plans to accommodate the anticipated surge. This includes exploring helicopter transfers for visitors who wish to avoid the lengthy drive to BC Place Stadium.
“We’ve had numerous inquiries from charter companies and private operators regarding our services, fuel availability, and customs clearance,” Rieberger stated. “However, solid bookings will likely be confirmed only 24 to 48 hours prior to arrival.”
Air Traffic Management Preparedness
Nav Canada, responsible for air traffic services across the country, has been meticulously planning for the summer’s demand profile for more than a year. The organisation’s past experience with major events such as the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and the 2018 G7 Summit has equipped them with the knowledge to manage increased air traffic effectively.
A spokesperson for Nav Canada remarked, “We have a proven track record of delivering safe and efficient services during significant international events. Our planning for the World Cup draws directly from the protocols and lessons learned from those occasions.”
Margolis confirmed that preparations for the FIFA tournament have been underway since 2022, with teams working diligently to ensure that the influx of visitors is handled smoothly.
Commercial Flights Set for Full Capacity
While private jets are grabbing headlines, Margolis reassured fans who may not have the luxury of private aviation that commercial flight operations will remain unchanged. However, he anticipates that these flights will be operating at full capacity.

During the summer months, YVR typically sees around 80,000 passengers daily. With projections indicating a potential 5 to 10 per cent increase in passenger numbers during the World Cup, Margolis noted, “This is not a significant rise in our system; it simply means those travellers will be coming for FIFA-related events.”
Why it Matters
The FIFA World Cup represents a monumental occasion not just for soccer fans but also for the local economy and international exposure of Vancouver. The influx of high-profile visitors and the associated increase in air traffic will showcase the city on a global stage, highlighting its readiness to host major events. This period will not only bolster the tourism sector but also enhance the city’s reputation as a premier destination for international gatherings. As Vancouver gears up for this prestigious tournament, the careful orchestration of logistics at its airports demonstrates the city’s commitment to providing a seamless experience for its esteemed guests.
