As preparations ramp up for the FIFA World Cup, scheduled to kick off next month, airports around Metro Vancouver are bracing for an influx of high-profile visitors. World leaders, celebrities, and wealthy individuals are expected to arrive in private jets, significantly increasing air traffic at Vancouver International Airport (YVR). Andy Margolis, the airport’s chief operations officer, anticipates a rise from the usual daily count of 15 to 25 private planes, though he emphasises that the numbers will likely not reach the staggering highs seen during Taylor Swift’s concert in December 2024.
Anticipated Increase in Private Jet Arrivals
Vancouver is set to host seven matches during the tournament, and while the arrival of private jets is expected to surge, Margolis is cautious in his estimates. “The World Cup spans several weeks. I don’t foresee the numbers on the days surrounding the games reaching the levels we saw for Taylor Swift,” he stated. He reassured that the airport’s capacity is well-equipped to handle the increased demand.
Private aircraft arriving at YVR must schedule their landing times and coordinate with one of three specialist companies operating at the airport. These firms provide a range of amenities, from luxury hangars to exclusive pilot lounges. However, the precise number of private jets expected remains uncertain, as most bookings are typically made closer to the arrival date.
Meanwhile, Boundary Bay Airport in Delta, British Columbia, is preparing for a similar uptick in private jet traffic. Unlike YVR, Boundary Bay operates on a first-come, first-served basis for landings, which may appeal to those wishing to bypass the more structured scheduling at YVR.
Contingency Plans in Place
Julia Rieberger, the administrative manager for Alpha Aviation, which operates Boundary Bay, confirmed that they are proactively developing contingency plans to accommodate the expected rise in private traffic. These plans include additional parking for aircraft and the possibility of helicopter transfers to Vancouver, which would help visitors avoid the 30-kilometre journey to BC Place Stadium.
“We’ve had numerous inquiries from charter companies and private operators regarding our pricing, fuel supplies, and customs clearance,” Rieberger explained. “While we’ve received a lot of interest, solid bookings are likely to materialise only 24 to 48 hours before arrival.”
Historically, Boundary Bay sees only a modest number of private jets each week, but Rieberger, like Margolis, does not anticipate an influx on the scale of the Taylor Swift event.
Air Traffic Management Preparedness
Nav Canada, the body responsible for the nation’s air traffic services, has been strategising for the summer’s heightened demands for over a year. Their planning incorporates lessons learned from past major international events hosted in Canada, such as the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and the G7 Summits.
“Nav Canada has a proven track record of delivering safe and efficient services during significant international events,” a spokesperson stated. “Our preparations for this summer are built on established protocols and extensive coordination with airlines, airport authorities, and regional airports that typically manage overflow traffic.”
Margolis highlighted that YVR has been in preparation mode for the World Cup since 2022. Although private jet arrivals are expected to rise, the number of commercial flights remains stable. YVR typically accommodates around 80,000 passengers daily during the summer months, and projections indicate a modest increase of 5 to 10 per cent in passenger numbers during the tournament.
