In a significant move to enhance passenger connectivity, Via Rail has announced plans for a new integrated transit hub in Dorval, Quebec. This initiative aims to streamline connections for long-distance train travellers arriving at one of Canada’s busiest airports, Montreal’s Trudeau International. The proposed hub will unite Via Rail, exo train services, and airport shuttle options under one roof, facilitating a more user-friendly transit experience.
A Vision for Seamless Travel
Via Rail announced its plans on Wednesday, detailing the vision of a consolidated transit centre that will serve both local commuters and visitors arriving from afar. Karl Helou, a spokesperson for Via Rail, highlighted the intention behind the project: “The goal really is to group all of the transportation options under the same roof to provide really a one-stop shop for transit for people in Dorval, for people coming in from outside, inside the city. And really the goal is to make the whole experience better for everyone.”
Currently, the process for transferring between Via Rail and exo trains is cumbersome. Passengers must navigate through an underpass and across several roads to reach their destination. Helou described the existing transit system as “fragmented,” and this new hub is expected to simplify the transfer process significantly.
Local Support for Transformative Project
The project has garnered strong support from local officials, including Dorval Mayor Marc Doret, who emphasised the current challenges faced by commuters. “It’s very difficult to get around the area right now,” Doret stated. “We’re going to have everything together in one central area, and that’s what’s going to make it easier and user-friendly for the public.”
Local residents echo this sentiment. Paul Parisien, a West Island resident, expressed his enthusiasm for the potential integration with the Réseau express métropolitain (REM) light rail system, stating, “That would be fantastic. And if we could connect it with the REM somehow, then we would have a totally integrated public transportation system.”
Enhancing Public Transit Usage
Via Rail’s initiative is not only about convenience; it also aims to encourage a shift away from car dependency. Helou remarked on the importance of integrated mobility: “Integrated mobility is a proven concept. Offer transportation options that are easy to use, simple to use, and people will use it. For every transportation need, there is a transportation option.”
The plan involves closing the existing Via Rail station situated on the south side of the CN tracks and constructing a new bimodal station on the northern end, adjacent to the current exo stop. This will include an overpass that ensures uninterrupted service for both Via Rail and exo trains.
Funding and Timeline
While Via Rail has secured funding from the Government of Canada, a definitive budget for the project has yet to be established. Additionally, the timeline for construction remains tentative, with Helou estimating that the completion of the hub could take between two and five years.
