Via Rail has announced a strategic initiative aimed at revolutionising long-distance travel connections at one of Canada’s busiest airports. The Crown corporation revealed on Wednesday its plans to establish a new integrated transit hub in Dorval, Quebec, designed to seamlessly link Via Rail services, exo trains, and shuttle services to Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport.
A Vision for Integrated Transit
Karl Helou, a spokesperson for Via Rail, articulated the vision behind the initiative, stating, “The goal really is to group all of the transportation options under the same roof to provide a one-stop shop for transit for people in Dorval, as well as those travelling from outside the city.” The current transit landscape in Dorval has been described as “fragmented,” making it challenging for passengers to navigate the connections. This new hub aims to simplify the travel experience significantly.
At present, commuters transitioning from Via Rail to exo trains must traverse an underpass and navigate several roads to reach their destinations. Local residents have expressed enthusiasm for the integrated hub, with Paul Parisien, a West Island resident, noting, “That would be fantastic. And if we could connect it with the REM [light rail] somehow, then we would have a totally integrated public transportation system.”
Local Leaders Show Support
Dorval’s Mayor, Marc Doret, has voiced his full backing for the project, emphasising the necessity of improving transit accessibility in the area. “It’s very difficult to get around the area right now,” he said. “We’re going to have everything together in one central area, and that’s what’s going to make it easier and user-friendly for the public.” The project has garnered attention not only for its potential impact on local commuting but also for its broader implications for public transit usage in the region.
A Shift Towards Sustainable Mobility
Via Rail’s initiative is part of a larger strategy to encourage public transit use, reducing reliance on personal vehicles. Helou remarked, “Integrated mobility is a proven concept. Offer transportation options that are easy to use, and people will use it.” By creating a comprehensive transit environment, the hope is to shift more commuters towards sustainable transport solutions.
The proposed plan involves closing the existing Via Rail station on the south side of the CN tracks and constructing a new bimodal station on the north side, close to the current exo stop. This will include an overpass over the tracks, ensuring that both Via Rail and exo train services remain uninterrupted during construction. Helou reassured that there would be “no disruptions of service and a much better experience, an accessible experience for passengers.”
Funding and Timeline
While Via Rail has secured funding from the Government of Canada, a final budget for the project has yet to be established. The timeline for completion remains uncertain; however, Helou indicated that full construction could take between two and five years.
