Via Rail has announced an exciting initiative aimed at enhancing long-distance travel for passengers at one of Canada’s busiest airports. On Wednesday, the Crown corporation revealed plans to establish a new integrated transit hub in Dorval, Quebec, designed to facilitate seamless connections between Via Rail, exo trains, and shuttle services to Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport.
A Vision for Integrated Transportation
Karl Helou, a spokesperson for Via Rail, explained that the objective is to consolidate various transportation options under one roof, creating a convenient ‘one-stop shop’ for commuters and travellers alike. “The goal really is to group all of the transportation options under the same roof to provide really a one-stop shop for transit for people in Dorval, for people coming in from outside, inside the city. And really the goal is to make the whole experience better for everyone,” he told Global News.
Currently, the transit setup in Dorval is described as “fragmented,” requiring passengers to navigate an underpass and cross several roads to transfer between services. Helou emphasised that the new hub would significantly simplify the travel experience in the area, making it more user-friendly.
Community Support for the Project
Local residents have expressed enthusiasm regarding the proposed hub. Paul Parisien, a West Island resident, remarked, “That would be fantastic. And if we could connect it with the REM [light rail] somehow, then we would have a totally integrated public transportation system.” Such connections would not only enhance convenience but could also encourage more individuals to utilise public transport rather than relying on personal vehicles.
Dorval Mayor Marc Doret also voiced his strong backing for the initiative, highlighting the current challenges of navigating the area. “It’s very difficult to get around the area right now,” he stated. “We’re going to have everything together in one central area, and that’s what’s going to make it easier and user-friendly for the public.”
Enhancing Mobility and Accessibility
Via Rail’s plans aim to promote integrated mobility, which has been recognised as a successful model in urban transit systems. Helou noted, “Integrated mobility is a proven concept. Offer transportation options that are easy to use, simple to use, and people will use it.” By combining various transit methods, the hope is that more individuals will opt for public transport over cars, thereby reducing congestion and benefiting the environment.
The proposal includes closing the existing Via Rail station on the south side of the CN tracks and constructing a new bimodal station on the north end, adjacent to the current exo stop. To ensure uninterrupted service, an overpass will be built over the tracks, allowing both Via Rail and exo trains to continue operating without disruption.
Funding and Timeline
While Via Rail has secured funding from the Government of Canada, a definitive budget for the project has yet to be established. Additionally, a timeline for completion remains uncertain, but Helou indicated that full construction could take anywhere from two to five years.
