Via Rail has announced an innovative initiative aimed at streamlining travel for long-distance train passengers connecting at one of Canada’s busiest airports. The Crown corporation revealed on Wednesday plans for a new integrated transit hub in Dorval, Quebec, which will unify Via Rail services, exo trains, and shuttle options to Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport.
A Vision for Seamless Travel
“The aim is to consolidate all transportation options under one roof, creating a comprehensive one-stop shop for both local residents and visitors,” explained Karl Helou, a spokesperson for Via Rail. This move is expected to alleviate the current “fragmented” transit system in Dorval, simplifying the journey for travellers navigating through the area.
At present, passengers switching from Via Rail to exo trains face multiple challenges, including a trek through an underpass and across busy roads to reach their transfer points. Many commuters welcome the prospect of a more integrated hub. “That would be fantastic. If we could connect it with the REM [light rail] somehow, we would have a fully integrated public transportation system,” remarked Paul Parisien, a West Island resident.
Local Support for the Initiative
Dorval Mayor Marc Doret has expressed his strong endorsement for the transit hub project, highlighting the difficulties faced by people in the area due to the current transport infrastructure. “Navigating the area is quite challenging at the moment,” he noted. “Bringing everything together in one central location will greatly enhance user-friendliness for the public.”
The integration of various transit options is not just about convenience; it aims to encourage a shift away from car dependence. Helou emphasised that “integrated mobility is a proven concept,” stating that when transportation options are straightforward and accessible, people are more likely to utilise them.
Future Developments and Funding
The plan involves the closure of the existing Via Rail station located on the south side of the CN tracks. A new bimodal station is proposed for the north end, adjacent to the current exo stop. Helou assured that there will be an overpass constructed over the tracks, ensuring uninterrupted service for both Via Rail and exo trains. “Our goal is to provide a significantly improved and accessible experience for all passengers,” he affirmed.
While Via Rail has secured funding from the Government of Canada, the final budget for the project has yet to be determined. The timeline for construction remains unspecified, but Helou indicated that the process could take anywhere from two to five years to complete.
